Critical Notes on The First Trailer for Netflix’s Adaptation of “Death Note”

Last week we got our first glimpse into the American live action version of Death Note.

Being the geek I am, I have a deep love for this anime and Japanese live action movie series. It looks like the trailer begins with the Death Note falling from the sky into Light’s hands.

My first thought: Will this movie explain the hilarious reason as to why the book fell from the heavens?

And, my next thought, is this guy’s name still Light Yagami or has it been changed? (Editorial Note: It’s been changed to Light Turner).

The trailer doesn’t give away a ton other than letting the viewer know that Light has the Death Note in his possession, and what its’ capable of. We also see a little love interest, some people plummeting to their demise, and some crazy action scenes. I can tell you that there are some intense deaths that happened in this series, so it looks like we can expect to see that translated into the Netflix movie. A fear I have is that this movie will take out all the supernatural lure of the series. Death Note does take place in our regular world. But, there’s so much more tied to how the Death Note works and I certainly hope the rules stay the same. As all the anime fans know, those rules play a huge part into the overall plot.

I’d like to end this on a happy note. I think Willem Defoe will be an amazing Ryuk. At the end of the trailer we get a small glimpse of Ryuk, and we get to hear some voice acting. Willem Dafoe will be a perfect fit in my opinion. I highly suggest watching the Japanese films starring Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light Yagami. His portrayal was spot-on. I hope the actors in the American version do as well, but we’ll all have to wait a little longer to see.

Death Note stars Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out), Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire), Nat Wolff (Paper Towns), and Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers).
