Attack on Titan Season 2 Premiere: This Was Worth the Epic Wait

If you somehow missed the phenomenon that is the anime series Attack on Titan go watch Season 1 now. Seriously, it’s streaming on multiple sources. Anyway, season 2 just premiered on April 1st after a very long wait. By a very long wait I mean years, and it was definitely worth the wait. I’d like to share with you a little of what’s going on this season and some new things I noticed.

To start off, I really think the animation looks ever better. I believe Attack on Titan is one of the most beautiful anime’s from animation to direction. Stunning. I’m going to assume you’ve seen season 1 from this point. You get to see your favorite surviving characters right where they left off. You also get to meet some new characters that are stationed in a different area.  And, we already get to meet a new abnormal type Titan! I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but prepare to have your mind blown. I feel like we’re going to learn more about how the Titans evolve this season.

One thing that I had the tiniest complaint about was one very short scene where they used full CG while some characters were riding on horseback. Attack on Titan has always mixed CG and hand-drawn animation seamlessly, but in this one scene it’s really obvious that everything moving is CG. And, that’s a very small complaint. I like the introduction of new characters, new Titan types, and I think the plot is headed in a great direction. I can’t wait to watch more.

My rating: 9/10

As Sheena said, if you somehow missed Attack on Titan Season 1, you should go watch it immediately. Especially now that you can access a new episode of season 2 each week instead of waiting for years like the rest of us. The wait was well worth it though. We are greeted with the characters we have grown to love (or hate), new faces, new areas, and in classic anime fashion – a brand new, epic intro song.

The creators know we have been waiting and they take no time in initiating the first Titan attack with Miche, Levi’s second in command, heading straight into battle by himself to take on 9 Titans and ensure the others escape. There he meets a new Titan. An “Abnormal” as they call them. He looks more like a monkey than he does a human, oh, and HE SPEAKS. But that’s all I’m going to tell you about him. While Miche is fighting and the others are fleeing, Eren wakes up and we are happily reunited with our main trio: Eren, Mikasa and Armin. Though it’s under immediate tense circumstances. This show seriously does not waste time. That’s one of my favorite things about it.

Again, like Sheena said, the art is amazing as always blending regular animation with CG. And as per usual, the Titans look disturbing as fuck. Like, I am always so torn. I want to laugh but at the same time, they are absolutely terrifying. For a season kick off, this episode was amazing. We are presented with more questions that need answered, we are traveling deeper into the rabbit hole and within it we have found a conspiracy that it going to take us down even further. Unless you read the manga, in which case, you already know the answers. But keep them to yourself. My complaint for the episode differs from Sheena’s, my complaint is about Miche. I don’t want to spoil anything, so what I will say is there is a certain point where he makes a really stupid decision. REALLY stupid. Like. When it happened I literally yelled “why the fuck would you do that?” at my TV. For a Section Commander, I’m really disappointed in his quick decision making. That’s really the most I can say though without spoiling anything.

So for a score, I side with Sheena. Solid 9/10. And now we wait. Although, we waited years for this episode, so I guess a week is nothing in comparison. I’m still going to complain about it though.
