Review: Supergirl: Being Super #3

By: Sheena Fisher

Kara is still trying to figure out her past, where she came from, and how she got to earth. She’s just dealt with the death of a close friend and totally blames herself. I can tell she feels disconnected and numb. Kara knows she is an alien, but she doesn’t know where she comes from. And, she certainly doesn’t fully understand her powers.

In this issue we discover that Kara is still reeling from the death of her friend Jennifer. Of course she blames herself for not being able to save her from a terrible earthquake. Kara can fly. But, will she fall out of the sky? Our young quite not Supergirl yet questions her abilities just as quickly as she learns how to use them. This makes Kara even more relatable in my eyes.

Of course, there’s something else happening here. Kara finds out that a friend and mentor that she thought she could trust is doing terrible things. There’s some betrayal happening that sends Kara into a much needed and well time rage. Kara also discovers that she’s able to communicate telepathically. But, who is she talking to? “Save me” repeats the voice. It’s in a language she understands, but doesn’t know the name of. It’s up to Kara to discover the truth of her own story.

This issue helps to put bigger things in motion. There’s not a lot of fighting or action. But, trust me there is a good amount of mystery and discovery. It’s also very humanizing to see how Kara interacts with her friend Dolly while they grieve over the loss of a mutual friend. There’s a few first-time powers Kara discovers making this issue notable. I’m not about spoilers so you’ll have to pick up issue #3 to learn more.

7.5/10
