Dan’s Movie Menu: Who’s Directing The Flash Movie? Fassbender Back as Magneto?

Daniel Cohen’s Movie Menu serves up all the biggest movie news and rumors of the past week.

David Ayer in Talks to Direct Scarface Reboot for 2018

On face value, the idea of a Scarface remake makes us all want to puke. This is one of those “hallowed ground” movies. Don’t touch this. Please. Having said that, the Coen Brothers penned the script.  That alone gives it credibility. Diego Luna (Rogue One) is also set to star.  Even though I bemoan Rogue One, he’s still a very good choice.

Speaking of good choices, it was Antoine Fuqua of Training Day fame who was tapped to helm this, but he dropped out. According to Deadline , the front runner is now David Ayer of Suicide Squad fame.

I’m going to keep this short and sweet:

No.

Robert Zemeckis Back in the Fold for Flash Director, Among Others

Holy speed force. You need to be as fast as the Flash to keep up with all these directing rumors. Been waiting all day to use that one.

It’s been a long and winding road for Ezra Miller’s The Flash. First it was Phil Lord and Chris Miller. They bolted for Han Solo. Then it was Seth Grahame-Smith. Gone. Third time’s a charm? Nope. After everyone got all tingly at the selection of Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), he ran away due to reported creative differences.

It’s fitting that the Preakness happened over the weekend. Earlier this week, we had three front-runners emerge, reported by three different sites. The Wrap is calling it for Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future Trilogy, Forrest Gump), who’s been rumored for ages. Variety also reports Zemeckis, but adds Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Kingsman) to the mix. The Hollywood Reporter has even added a third dark horse, Sam Raimi (The Original Spider-Man Trilogy, Oz: The Great and Powerful).

Well, it looks like the latter is already off the table, as Entertainment Weekly claims Sam Raimi has passed, as well as Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man). Yeah, apparently he was in the mix too. Geez, what’s WB’s obsession with Spider-Man directors? For the love of Aunt May.

As far as Raimi goes, I breathed a MASSIVE sigh of relief when I read this. No, thanks. Sorry everyone, but Sam Raimi is not my cup of Gatorade. He’s a slightly better David Ayer. Character always seems to be low on the list for Raimi, especially in those Spider-Man movies, where Tobey Maguire played the most boring character in the history of film.

It seems like this job is going to Robert Zemeckis, and I am 100% ALL IN. Yes. Do it. This guy is one of the greatest directors of all time  He simply delivers quality. He’s like the Tim Duncan of directors. Just let him do his thing. I know he’s hit a rough patch box office wise, but The Walk and Allied were still really good movies. As Flash also involves time travel, I’m pretty sure Zemeckis has had some experience in that area.

I’m sure the internet popular pick will be Matthew Vaughn, who’s also been rumored for Man of Steel 2. I’d be mixed on Vaughn. While X-Men: First Class was outstanding, he seems too focused on fun, fun, fun. Fun is great, but it shouldn’t be your whole film. With Vaughn in the directing chair, I fear we’ll lose some of the seriousness I want from these superhero movies.

At the end of the day, Zemeckis is going to take this job, but it will be a while before we see this movie.

The director shouldn’t be the biggest concern. Joby Harold will also be doing a rewrite.  He’s one of the screenwriters on King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Ummmmmmmmmmmm…

Final War for the Planet of the Apes Trailer Arrives

Looks fine. That’s pretty much all I have to say.

I’ve enjoyed the Apes movies, but I’ve never been blown away, with the exception of Andy Serkis’ Caesar. None of the other characters have really hit for me. I give Matt Reeves credit for making very workmanlike, competent summer blockbusters, but these movies lack something.

This will come out. It will do well. Everyone will like it. But much like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, we’ll forget about it two weeks later.

Tom Hardy is Eddie Brock/Venom. Ruben Fleischer will Direct

Nobody’s laughing at this movie anymore. What a HUGE get for Sony. Wow.

If you put a gun to my head at the time this movie was announced, I would have said it has 0% chance of making it to the screen. Remember Sony’s Sinister Six plans? Yeah.

When you get an actor like Tom Hardy though, you’re going all in. This also gives your movie instant credibility. Tom Hardy infuses interest. Plain and simple. This isn’t one of those “Oh, that’s a solid choice” type picks. This is a “HOLY S**T!” pick. I’m sure there are many like me who went from not caring about Venom to “I’m Intrigued.” The idea of Tom Hardy in a Rated-R Venom movie raises your eyebrows. To be fair, Hardy has been attached to superhero projects before that never came to fruition (Suicide Squad, Doctor Strange). Nevertheless, this was a major casting coup for Sony.

The director is also a solid choice. Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) is certainly hit or miss, but he deserves a superhero shot. This is a good fit for him.

I know this movie has a big mountain to climb for people, as it has the whole stigma of “Wait, is this part of the MCU? Is Tom Holland showing up? Mmmmmmraaaaaaa, I don’t get it!”

For me, I don’t care about that garbage. I just want a good movie.

Michael Fassbender Probably Back as Magneto in More X-Men Films

In the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Fassbender alluded to the fact that he’d probably be back as Magneto.

Good.

I know X-Men: Apocalypse disappointed a lot of people, but Fassbender as Magneto was BY FAR the best part. I don’t know why there’s such a rush to move on from Professor X and Magneto. We trick ourselves into thinking this is best for the franchise, but these are two classic characters. Just write good material, and we’ll love it. I want more James McAvoy. I want more Michael Fassbender. These guys are brilliant in the roles. Why would you put up a stink about getting them back in the fold? I don’t get it.

When asked if he’d be back in New Mutants or Dark Phoenix, Fassbender was non-committal, but let’s be honest – it will be Dark Phoenix. I have no doubt McAvoy will also be back.

Look, if you’re going to do the Dark Phoenix story, and I mean really do it, then commit for crying out loud! Professor X and Magneto need to play roles. We’ll have plenty of X-Men movies to explore different characters. For Dark Phoenix, get the old reliables in there and do it right. That means more Professor X and Magneto.

If the X-Men franchise has proven anything, it’s that if you make great movies, people will come (Days of Future Past, Logan).
