Review: Harley Quinn #23

By: Sheena Fisher

We pick up with Harley Quinn still in a towel and talking with Harley Sinn. Sinn is threatening Harley’s sweet pupper while telling her about ending up in Arkham. This is enough to make our girl’s blood boil resulting in a much deserved punch to Sinn’s face. Harley frees Mason and Madame Macabre. And, the two carry Sinn out so Harley can have that dinner with her parents.

We also see that Spoonsdale is on a date with his wife. He is still upset about learning what he did in the last issue. All those prisoners getting set free and some getting sent to Arkham. He just knows the mayor is up to something. And, what good timing, the Mayor decides to have dinner at the same joint. Spoonsdale confronts the mayor and they have a private meeting in the men’s restroom. It doesn’t end well for either party and I can tell you it’s gonna get real ugly in a few issues.

Well, it’s finally happening, dinner with Harley’s parents. Goat Boy is accompanying her, and even brought flowers for Harley’s mom. On the subway ride over Harley says some awesome things to live by again “Look at all this wonderfulness around us! It’s a cryin’ shame some people judge other people just fer bein different.” Wise wise words. Once they arrive at dinner Harley has spared no expense. She spoils them with dinner on a fancy boat, and even buys one of every type of dessert. Just as dessert orders are placed Clock King and Sportsman decide they want to rob the boat. Unfortunately for them the amazing and unbelievable Harley Quinn is there, and she brought her costume!

Oh, and something I could never neglect to discuss. Poison Ivy is in this issue. This is not a drill. I love it anytime we see her show up. This time Red Tool is asking her for help. Not sure what he needs help with, but we see Ivy talk more about why she can’t live with Harley and about how much she misses her girl. Deep and cute stuff guys.

Now onto our next story arch, Harley Loves Joker. Looks like Joker misses Harley, she’s been busy working on the new headquarters to surprise him. We even get to see the girls working on the headquarters in a cute montage. Jenna and Harley are hard at work, but don’t worry Joker is keeping busy too. He’s meeting with Oswald, AKA, The Penguin. Can’t wait to see where that leads. The girls complete the headquarters, the bill is only 3 million…enough to make Harley pass out.

So, as you can tell this issue isn’t action-packed. But, it definitely is setting up some awesome stories. The water is getting murky for Spoonsdale. And, Soon Ivy and Red Tool will be helping out Harley. Let’s not forget that some conflict could come up between The Joker and Harley in Harley loves Joker. I’m fine with story set-ups and waiting for butt-kicking. Going to rate this issue 8/10.
