Insecure Season 2 “Secures” Late Night Success

Written by Jihan Dempster

Insecure Season 2 Premiere Plot Summary:

Issa (Issa Rae) struggles with her job and goes on tumultuous dates to keep her mind off of the dramatic breakup. Lawrence (Jay Ellis) continues his “relationship” with an old fling while his friend Chad (Neil Brown Jr.) allows Lawrence to crash in his living room. Molly (Yvonne Orji) is exposed to her male coworkers being paid a higher salary.

This show is down-right funny. The conversations are so relatable that you often feel that you could play your own role in the cast. My favorite part of this show is the writing. The plays on black experiences are placed to really show a typical day in the life of a 20-something-year-old trying to mangle corporate America while maintaining a healthy social life. Issa’s mirror moments are hilarious. Now that she has the lower end of the stick in her relationship with Lawrence, her rhymes become less confident and more humble. It definitely brings together the idea that Lawrence has the upper hand.

In one of the more climactic moments of the episode, Issa throws a plus one “wine down.” This is thrown in an effort to have Lawrence pick up his mail at the same time to make him jealous of her continued success amid their breakup. Lawrence stands her up, to go on a date, and shows up to the apartment a day later when Issa is the least prepared. This is a typical situation of the uncertainties of breakups. With a quick rendezvous and Lawrence walking out of the apartment wordless and swift, we are left hanging by a thread. The episode is over. One lingering thought: where exactly does Issa stand with Daniel (Y’lan Noel), who does not appear in the season opener? We know he’ll return since her relationship with him is what led to all of this in the first place.

This is what I like best about Insecure. It leaves the door open for viewers to create their own scenarios of what can happen next, then throws you a plot twist that you never anticipated. The show creates camaraderie between viewers, genders, professionals, races, and just millennials in general. Watching the show is an interactive experience where you actually want to watch the show with other people present.

I’m anxious to see what next week brings.
