Pre-Trailer Thoughts:
One of the best detective stories of all time, Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express has been adapted to film or television multiple times and almost always with a star-studded cast. This time around is no different, with acclaimed Shakespearean director Kenneth Branagh taking the director’s seat as well as the lead role of Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. -JTM

Rate the Trailer: 3 out of 5. The steady POV tracking shot, slowly introducing each of our suspects Poirot walks down the train car, is a fantastic shot that does a great job of setting up the unease among the passengers as they each wonder who might be the culprit. I’ve only got two real huge gripes with this trailer that brings it’s score down. The first (which isn’t exactly the fault of the trailer) is the presence of Johnny Depp, who has far overstayed his welcome as Hollywood’s go-to quirky actor. The second is the Imagine Dragons song used for the big ‘reveal’ of Hercule Poirot. For such a striking moment I don’t think they could have used a more jarring song, taken straight from one of the most overblown bands of the past decade. – JTM

Theater, Rent, Undecided, No Thanks?
Undecided. The large cast is intriguing and Branagh is definitely an esteemed director, but I’m not sold on this yet. I’ve read the story many times and know how it will all end, so I’m not sure if this adaptation bring enough to the table to get me to see a “mystery” that I’ve already solved.I guess this is one where I’ll wait for the reviews. – JTM
