Review: Harley Quinn #29

In issue #28 we saw Harley take down a chop shop. She used this victory alongside Spoonsdale to announce that she’s running for mayor. We also saw that Berkowitz and the current Mayor were trying to kill her. And, we saw them enlist a new baddie since the unconquerable 25 were easily conquered. So, does Harley stand a chance of winning?

We learn that it’s one month into the election. Harley is educating herself and taking things very seriously. I can tell she wants to make New York a better place. She’s even gone so far as to take notes of regular citizens as they pass her. She’s incognito as a homeless person, so the citizens are talking freely about what they like and dislike about her. Harlem Harley and Poison Ivy are doing their best to help Harley prepare for tomorrow’s debate by giving her information to study.

After a hard day of campaigning we see Harley head back to her room for some much needed rest. Just as she and Nathan are about to tuck in for the night, there’s a knock at her door. With all the crazy stuff that’s been going on she instructs Nathan to hide under the bed, and grabs a gun. To her surprise it’s Mason with food. Looks like things are finally looking up for Harley and Mason.

Ivy is kind enough to order room service for Harley. Ivy’s always had Harley’s back, even with something as small as making sure she’s properly fed. But, the day has arrived, the big debate. Ok so spoiler from the last issue, but I assume you’ve read it if you’re this far into my review. Dr. Crane, the scarecrow himself, was hired to take down Harley. Madison and DePerto will stop at nothing to take her down.

Dr. Crane does exactly what you would expect him to do. He uses his fear gas on Harley right in the middle of her debate question. I’m not going to tell you Harl’s deep dark fears. You’re going to have to pick up this issue to find out what they truly are. But, I will tell you that outside of her mind in the fear gas she’s putting up one hell of a fight. Punching at her opponents trying to save herself. It gets so bad she starts to convulse. Can Harley be saved?

Ok so obviously this issue doesn’t have a lot of ass-kicking from our girls. What it does have is lots of heart. Many things that point out how much Ivy loves Harley, and how supportive Harley’s friends are. I’ll forgive the lack of violence that we’ve grown to love from Harley in this one. Because who doesn’t love a classic batman villain appearance? Also the campaign is getting interesting. Pick up this issue at your local comic shop.
