Trailer Tuesday: The Amazing Spider-Man

bill bodkin and logan j. fowler look at the reboot of the Spider-Man series and wonder if a reboot can be good as the first …

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Theater. A lot of people have attacked the news of movie Spider-Man 2.0. “The atmosphere is too dark, we don’t need a reboot this soon, why is this film even being made?” Yeah, it kind of stinks that we we have to sit through the origin story again, and while I do agree while the reboot was too soon, there is no stopping it. And I won’t beg to try, either — the trailer engages my Spidey senses, as he is my favorite superhero of all time. It looks gritty but I dig the take on it, it’s different, intriguing, and this may be the movie that the 2002 Spider-Man flick needed to be. With an all star cast (Andrew Garfield as the webhead, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Dennis Leary), the wallcrawler is looking to swing high next summer. Heck, if they even clean up that final POV shot (looks like a video game, but I really like the idea), I may even splurge for 3-D and IMAX. To quote the theme song, “Look out! Here comes the Spider-Man!” Again, yes. But this fanboy can’t wait.

I was one of those people who thought, “Why did we need to reboot Spider-Man?” The first two Spider-Man films were excellent. Tobey Maguire captured the boyish charm and the internal strife — the essence of Peter Parker. Director Sam Raimi was able to craft two films that were fun and funny, serious and silly in the right spots — like a great comic book.

However, I have to say I am seriously impressed with the Spidey reboot’s trailer. Andrew Garfield is one of the best young actors out there today. In his short career, he’s been able to play the bright eyed wonderer and the jaded, disillusioned loner. He’s the perfect choice to play Peter Parker, especially in a film with a seemingly darker toner. The choice to include Gwen Stacey (with the brilliant casting of Emma Stone) instead of Mary Jane was smart — it would’ve been too much like the Raimi Spidey, if we brought M.J. back.

With a supporting cast of Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and Dennis Leary, you’ve got the formula for a really, really strong acted film. Let’s just hope this new “dark” Spider-Man isn’t too heavy and remembers that it still needs to “amaze” audiences.
