Glenn Close stars as attorney Patty Hewes on Damages, which now airs on DirecTV

Damages stars five-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close as the ruthless legal eagle Patty Hewes and Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class, Bridesmaids) as her protege, attorney Ellen Parsons. The show revolves around the women’s complex relationship and how that dynamic plays out in the high-profile, high-tension legal cases they take on.

A hallmark of the series are the intricate, white-knuckle storylines and an all-star cast, many of whom are stepping out of their normal acting element. The series has seen comedic actors Ted Danson and Martin Short take highly dramatic turns. The show has also featured Tate Donovan, Lily Tomlin, Campbell Scott, William Hurt, Timothy Olyphant, Marcia Gay Harden and Keith Carradine.

Yet despite critical acclaim and a slew of Emmy nominations — Close has won two for Best Actress — Damages suffered from a ratings decline. FX dropped the show after three seasons. The series didn’t air any new episodes during the 2010-11 TV season, leaving it off the Emmys’ shortlist for the first time since it debuted.

But DirecTV’s Audience Network — formerly the 101 Network — picked up Damages for two more season. It was similar to what happened to another critically adored but ratings-challenged series, Friday Night Lights, when DirecTV forged a deal with NBC to carry the high-school football drama.

In its fourth season — which debuted on the Audience Network in early July — Damages focus is a war corruption case involving a private military contractor in Afghanistan. John Goodman guest-stars throughout the season as the company’s CEO, while Emmy-nominated Dylan Baker guests as a shady CIA agent.

Since the show is mid-season, you can go to its official website and check out full episodes which you may have missed online.

Damages airs every Wednesday at 10 p.m. on DirecTV Channel 239.
