Album Review: Lettuce “Fly”

When you think of dance music the images that rush to the forefront of your imagination are probably jammed packed clubs, laser lights bouncing all over the joint, a DJ on the ones and twos, Macbook pro in front of them, big bass hooks thudding through countless souls as fists pump in the air.

And honestly, we can dig this. We’ve all been in the clubs, we’ve all raised our glasses, pumped our fists, thrown shapes into the subconscious world of dance.

However, when’s the last time you danced, I mean really danced, to a band? When’s the last time the groove of a bass guitar, the flourish of a keyboard, the crash of a high hat or a chorus of brass really got your soul shaking?

If the answer is never or not in a long time; then you need to stop what you’re doing and listen to Fly the new album by the band Lettuce.

Comprised of some of the best musicians in the business today Lettuce’s new record is just unabashed music for the soul. It has this infectiousness that rushes through your veins, infusing itself with all the adrenaline in your body and just making you feel alive, joyous and in the mood to get up and shake it. The music paints wonderful pictures in your mind — cinematic in scope, this is the perfect music to daydream to.

And what makes Fly different from the band’s last album, Rage!, is that there’s more of a delineation between the tracks on this album. Each song, while incorporating a jamtastic feel to it, has its own distinct personality, its own style, while tracks on Rage! seemed to blend together to well, often blurring the lines between which song was which. Here Lettuce punctuates each song with its own style, its own soul.

Fly is an album for the music lover who’s been dying for dance music that they can claim as their own — where they cherish Lettuce’s musical wizardry captured on MP3 or vinyl record while still busting a move on the dance floor.
