Love is in the air this week in the community of Rancho Cucamonga. The latest episode Comedy Central’s hit series, Workaholics, sheds a little light on the romantic endeavors of main offenders Anders, Adam, and Blake. Over the course of the series, we have seen our three heroes repeatedly try and fail miserably at finding female companionship. This week’s episode, “Webcam Girl” yields similar results, but is still entertaining nevertheless. And thus, we examine a very special Valentine’s Day episode of Workaholics.

The episode begins like many others, with the guys sitting around doing something spectacularly stupid. In the case of “Webcam Girl,” they are sitting in a local bar scoping the landscape for potential female targets. I use the word “targets” deliberately because these unfortunate women are victims in a sense. It quickly becomes evident that Anders, Adam, and Blake have absolutely no skills whatsoever when it comes to picking up women. In fact, by the time the opening credits roll, Adam has already been (justifiably) physically assaulted by an angry bachelorette after being on the receiving end of Adam’s lewd pick up lines. And yet, in spite of the violence, the guys still have no idea why their seduction methods haven’t been working. They surmise that their mutual addiction to internet pornography, or “pornog” as it is called in the show, must be the culprit. They have become so perverted over time as a result of their insatiable digital lust that they have forgotten how to communicate effectively with the ladies.

They turn to an internet chat site, Real Chixx Chat, for guidance. They do this under the assumption that this is not a porn site (excuse me, “pornog site”) but rather a place to meet normal girls and have a sensible conversation. The guys find a potential candidate in a woman who goes by the handle “JustAnna” and become intensely infatuated with her. The seduction begins with the guys serenading her with an acapella version of the Lisa Loeb song “Stay.” It’s at this point that I’d like to mention that this is not the first time the song “Stay” has been prominently featured in a Comedy Central series. There was an episode of The Sarah Silverman Program in which Sara is reunited with her supposedly dead father, and they decide to form a touring musical group that sings the song exclusively. Don’t get me wrong, “Stay” is a classic song from the nineties, but still, that’s kinda random.

Anyway, things get a little out of hand when the guys have to leave for work and realize that the chat site is blocked by the company’s computers. Adam remembers (from previous experience) that Alice’s office computer has no security measures in regard to pornography. In order to gain access to her computer, they lie to Alice and tell her that her ex-husband is in the parking lot and wants to reconcile. After she finds out that they are lying in order to access porn on her computer, they are sent home early from work. At home with nothing to do, they quickly get into trouble and subsequently get banned from the chat site. Instead of admitting defeat, they decide to go to the website offices in order to speak with “JustAnna” personally. The episode ends with Anders, Adam, and Blake finding out that their perfect woman is a mother of three and has been in and out of psych wards for most of her life. After the illusion of normalcy has been shattered, the guys lose interest and end up exactly where they started: at the bar trying and failing to meet women.

This week’s episode, “Webcam Girl,” was very funny if not a little sad. After three and a half seasons, it’s becoming apparent that these three guys are never going to find female companionship if they continue to live with one another. Thankfully, they have such short attention spans and are so thoroughly self-involved that this fact never seems to bother them for very long. Also, we get another celebrity cameo this week with Lisa Loeb (who has barely aged in the past twenty years) as a captive webcam girl. With ten episodes per season on average, it appears as though we have reached the halfway mark on season four. I’m excited to see what’s in store for the rest of the season. I’ll just be sad when it’s over.
