Film Review: +1

After a few years of remakes and recycled ideas, it is always exciting to find a film with a fresh concept. After a while, you become jaded, believing all original ideas have been used, leaving us with nothing but exorcism and found footage films.

Not today.

Today marks the release of a truly original film that most of you have never heard of because it wasn’t plastered all over the television or magazine covers. +1 (Plus One), directed by Dennis Iliadis (The Last House on the Left) is a little known film now but, if word of mouth does anything, hopefully this film will gain some notoriety.

We follow David (Rhys Wakefield) to a college party thrown by one of the richest guys in town. David and his girlfriend Jill (Ashley Hinshaw) have recently broken up due to a minor infidelity on David’s part. While scouring the party for his estranged ex-girlfriend, David and his friends begin to notice something strange happening with the lights. There is a small blackout and when the lights come back on, there is an exact replica of each person at the party, doing everything their doppelgänger did just fifteen minutes prior.

As the blackouts become more frequent, the replicas begin to move closer to present time, but what will happen when they catch up?

+1 is a wildly bloody ride of creativity, causing chaos and confusion with every flicker of the lights. It’s like Can’t Hardly Wait meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers, with a twist.

The sex scene alone is worth watching the film for. Seriously, I couldn’t stop laughing. What is better is that you get to watch it again with the replicas because the originals have already had sex fifteen minutes ago.

Now available on DVD and on Netflix, +1 is well worth your time and, in my opinion, your money. Don’t spend your time watching another paranormal exorcism remake. Spend it on something original. Support the independent filmmakers because, honestly, their product is just better.
