TV Recap: Community, ‘Bondage and Beta Male Sexuality’

community-season-5

Plot: When Professor Duncan (John Oliver) tries to put the moves on Britta (Gillian Jacobs), Jeff (Joel McHale) attempts to help him out. Duncan tries to woo Britta by telling her he’s attending an activist party, but the whole entire gang plans to go. However, Jeff’s feelings for Britta resurrect in the course of the evening. Meanwhile, Abed (Danny Pudi) has Kick Puncher movie plans, but a series of unfortunate events leads him to make a mess of Professor Hickey’s (Jonathan Banks) hidden hobby. The two connect over the mishap more than they ever could imagine. A side sub plot includes Chang (Ken Jeong) curious about an audience and/or a custodian being dead.

I have to admit, this episode of Community was a weak return after it was on break due to the Olympics. I didn’t really care for the Chang or Britta story, and Jeff having feelings for Britta again seemed almost like the writers were scooping water from a well that had no liquid left. The Jeff/Britta saga hadn’t been touched for a good long while, and I felt that ship sailed well enough a while back. But now, seems the show wants to bring up the past, where the Jeff/Annie relationship has a lot more going for it, to be honest.

I liked the whole Abed and Hickey piece more, as the two obviously have emotional cores that defy each other; Abed is open and can understand another person fairly well, but Hickey denies his own feelings regarding his work and picks on Abed for his behavior. Pudi and Banks portray interesting characters, and provide the better part of the episode here.

Also, there was a nice little moment where Abed walks the hallways in his Kick Puncher outfit, and he looks around quietly. I feel like that moment was an “I miss Troy” direction and I liked it. It stood out, because despite Hickey and Abed bonding, most of what happened in “Bondage and Beta Male Sexuality,” wasn’t memorable. Hopefully this is not a sign for the rest of the season ahead.

I did really like the Dane Cook joke though.
