Notable Openings This Weekend: And So It Goes, Hercules, Lucy

Here comes the second yawner of a weekend in a row. Fortunately, the next two weekends will provide a lot more excitement and intrigue, so let’s just get through this one. We got Luc Bessons, Dwayne Johnsons, Scarlett Johanssons, and Michael Douglas & Diane Keaton desperately trying to bring in the 60 and older demographic. In one of the most lackluster July weekends I can remember in a while, let’s do some predicting!

hercules

Dwayne Johnson is a legit star in Hollywood, but even they don’t open movies anymore. Unless he’s in a franchise film, Johnson’s movies have done decent, but nothing to write home about. Hercules will fare a little better because its got a known property attached to it, but we aren’t looking at anything earth shattering here. The trailers have been fine I guess, but diehard film fans will stay away because of Brett Ratner. Also, people may still have a bad taste in their mouths from the Kellan Lutz Hercules crap fest from earlier this year. I say that, but then again nobody saw The Legend of Hercules, so I guess it doesn’t matter.

Speaking of stars, we got another one opening opposite the big man in Scarlett Johansson. Talk about an actress who people thought was “okay,” to now being one of the most sought after names in Hollywood. Even though her new film doesn’t have the word “Marvel” in it, Lucy should do pretty well considering its a lower key film. The trailers have looked pretty slick, and Luc Besson certainly has his audience. This should be a nice opening for Johansson, getting her stock to rise just a little bit more.

And then we have And So It Goes. We always have one film every summer that tries to be the “It’s for you, old people!” movie. The problem with trying to get this demographic into the theater is that they don’t go to movies, so how will they ever know about it? Unless the ads are playing on Bob Newhart reruns on Nick at Nite 5 or something, it’s tank city for this one.

How Will It All Break Down…

Hercules could potentially make a run at #1, but Lucy should win pretty handedly. And So It Goes doesn’t make the top five.

TOP 5 BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS

1) Lucy — $34 Million
2) Hercules — $25 Million
3) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes — $19 Million
4) The Purge: Anarchy — $14 Million
5) Planes: Fire & Rescue — $10 Million
