Notable Openings This Weekend: Before I Go to Sleep, Nightcrawler

It’s time for a spoooooooooooooky edition of Bold Box Office Predictions. Well, not really. Halloween weekend probably doesn’t mean a whole lot of business at the box office, and there won’t be. This is the calm before the storm as next weekend starts a string of massive openings. Nolan. “Dumb” sequels. And of course Katniss “I shoot gold doubloons out of my arrows” Everdeen. But we’ll get to that stuff soon enough. Despite a lack of big titles opening, there is one potential gem that has been getting a lot of buzz, so at least we got that going for us.

Nightcrawler has been getting a lot of love, especially for its star (Jake Gyllenhaal) who will no doubt garner some Oscar talk. Personally, I don’t think the trailers have been that intriguing, but I can definitely see the potential. I haven’t seen Los Angeles shot this well since Drive back in 2011. This is one of those movies that may not break the bank opening weekend, but word of mouth might be able to carry it in future weeks. In a throwaway weekend though, its positioned itself pretty well.

Then we have Before I Go to Sleep. I honestly just found out this movie existed, despite starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong. I think the marketing budget on this thing was maybe $6 bucks, which means it probably blows bags and the studio wanted to dump it fast. Move along, nothing to see here.

HOW WILL IT ALL BREAK DOWN…

Thanks to great reviews and pathetic competition, Nightcrawler over performs to an easy #1 finish. Gone Girl barely knocks Before I Go to Sleep from the top five.

TOP 5 BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS

1. Nightcrawler — $17 Million
2. Ouija — $11 Million
3. John Wick – $9.5 Million
4. Fury — $7.5 Million
5. Gone Girl — $5.5 Million
