25 Days of Christmas: Home Alone

CHRISTMASHEADER

If the 80’s had A Christmas Story, 90’s kids had Home Alone.

A baby-faced McCaulay Culkin stars as Kevin McCallister, an 8-year-old black sheep of his clan who makes his family disappear! No, that’s not what really happened. Kevin winds up home alone when his family accidentally leaves him behind in the midst of hustling and bustling to make it to their winter vacation.

Kevin is content with the situation until a pair of robbers (played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) threaten to rob his home. The young McCallister rises to the occasion and devises schemes to protect himself and save Christmas for his family. Throw in some comedy and child-safe violent action scenes and you have one of the most watched holiday movies for over 20 years.

Home Alone is one family movie that will follow in the foot steps of the holiday classics before it. How could it not? It’s written and directed by the very people who inspired the last wave of Baby Boomers to introduce their children to 80’s gold The late John Hughes (Home Alone 2, The Breakfast Club and Ferris Beuler’s Day Off) wrote for the movie and Chris Columbus (The Goonies and Mrs. Doubtfire) directed it. It was made to last.

Thanks to Hughes and his writing team, you will find yourself instantly recanting and maybe reposting quotes like “Buzz, your girlfriend WOOF!” or “Keep the change, ya filthy animal!” The list could go on. The writing is one piece to the movie; the action scenes are hilarious and the casting includes well-known actors like Catherine O’Hara, John Candy, Michael C. Marrona (The Adventures of Pete & Pete) and many others.

This holiday season, when you’re tired of your cheap-scape uncle, your older brother who still is a jerk to you and your parent’s blind-eye to your high tolerance level, just put on this holiday classic and enjoy.
