The Big  Three  – Week 2: Daredevil, Suicide Squad, DC Comics

Daredevil

The Man with No Fear is the hands down winner of this week. First and most importantly, we got a trailer that features a lot of characters we hadn’t seen much of. We get good looks at Foggy Nelson, Stick, and of course Wilson Fisk a.k.a. Kingpin. They all seem very faithful to the comics and leave us wanting a lot more. We also got a couple of casting announcements dealing with some of the supporting villains Daredevil will be facing off against. The Marauder will be played by Rob Morgan and The Gladiator will be played by Matt Gerald. Fans will recognize the Gladiator as the first villain Daredevil fought in the comic books. Fans likely don’t recognize the Marauder.

The bit of Daredevil news that snuck under the radar was a review that was published this week. It is the first critical review of the show. According to Vinnie Mancuso from The New York Observer, Daredevil is going to blow everyone away.

I know it’s still early in the year, but I’m calling it now: The most beautifully choreographed fight scenes of 2015 will be on Netflix, courtesy of Marvel’s Daredevil. We’ve seen the first four episodes, and this show is like no other comic book adaption on the small screen yet. The beauty of Netflix is the freedom it allows—Daredevil gets as dark as the source material requires. It’s so dark, it’s almost a better Batman show than Gotham, and that show actually has Batman in it. If nothing else, Daredevil will rule the comic book TV landscape for years to come.”

Is it April 10th yet?

Suicide Squad

Also this week, Latino Review’s Umberto Gonzalez Instagrammed a bunch of new information on DC’s Suicide Squad. First he revealed that the Squad will be taking on the terrorist organization known as Onslaught and it will be led by the villainous Antiphon. Apparently Ed Harris is up for the role but nothing has been finalized. Ed Harris was originally rumored to be up for the role of Rick Flagg Sr. but things may have changed.

Either way Onslaught should pose an interesting threat to our anti-heroes considering the addition of the mercenary known as Deathstroke. That’s right Arrow fans, according to Gonzalez the super mercenary will be leading the charge against the Squad. According the rumors, Joe Mangienello is in final negotiations to play the role that is described as completely insane.

Gonzalez’s last scoop dealt with Jared Leto’s Joker. Apparently he will be based on the Joker from The Dark Knight Returns. That means he will have shoulder pads. Beyond that, he will also have a more complicated relationship with Batman as he (possible spoiler) killed one of the Robins. There were also rumors this week that Joker would be interacting with Batman villain Hugo Strange while in Arkham.

Convergence

It’s that time of year again. DC is rebooting their continuity again and you know what that means; new costumes! Every major hero got a new look and they range from pretty much exactly what we already have to completely insane. Here are the costumes from simple to bizarre.

Flash – They basically added some shadows to Flash’s costume. Otherwise it doesn’t look much different. He along with Thor and Cap has had one of the most consistent costumes in comic book history and he is celebrating his 75th anniversary this year.

Green Arrow – He has a hood and long hair. I can’t imagine where they got those from. Also he has a domino mask and baggy pants which look interesting. Definitely makes him look very street level.

Starfire – She is not the New 52 Starfire, so that’s a huge improvement.

Robin – In one of the biggest shifts away from the comics, Robin is now a team of kid heroes. They all wear R’s in the middle of civilian clothing and makeshift masks. I want to see where this one’s going.

Superman – The Man of Steel is following in the footsteps of the Grant Morrison New 52 run and wearing jeans and a t-shirt. He does now rock the older S with the black and red. That’s pretty cool. He also looks far more built than usual and we’re talking about Superman so that is saying something.

Wonder Woman – We are getting a much more armored Amazon this time around. She will be wearing cool golden shoulder pads and most notably has a pair of extended golden gauntlets that seem to function like Wolverine’s claws.

Green Lantern – So we might be ditching the ring entirely in the new GL run. In his promo image, Hal seems to be wearing a Lantern powered Infinity Gauntlet. The title over him does say ‘Renegade’ so maybe he is the bad ass who doesn’t wear a ring but they still exist. Who knows? He is also the second green hero on our list who has elected to wear a green hood. Hope that doesn’t get confusing.

Batman – He is a robot bunny now. In what is, by a country mile, the biggest change to a classic character, Batman will wear or control some sort of robot armor. According to Scott Snyder the direction they are going in is crazy. Whatever the Joker is going to do will have huge repercussions that will drastically change the character. He also is carrying a giant gun now so your guess on how we get there is as good as mine. And don’t get me wrong. I don’t hate this direction. I’ve always thought the Batman Iron Man similarities were pretty interesting. Might was well see what Bruce does with an Iron Man suit besides putting robot rabbit ears on it.
