TV Recap: Justified, ‘Trust’

JUSTIFIED -- Key Art

‘Trust’ Plot Summary:

In the aftermath of the botched vault heist, Boyd (Walton Goggins) and company enact Plan B on stealing Avery Markham’s (Sam Elliot) money, all the while Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) pressures his CI’s Duffy (Jere Burns) and Ava (Joelle Carter) to cooperate in order to finally catch Boyd in the act.

Leave it to the writers to just pull the rug out from under us in the last few minutes of an episode and completely change the game as we move into the home stretch of the series. Ava shooting Boyd and going on the run in front of Raylan, while Markham is now penniless and knows his soon to be wife Katherine Hale was partly behind the vault heist with Boyd and Duffy. Just so masterfully done.

To be fair, we had to go through the motions midway through the season but with the way it’s looking, everything has been saved for the final cluster of episodes. The slow burn has paid off thus far.

Immediately following the failed heist, Boyd plans to take Avery’s money while it’s on the move to another location. Which of course is what Wynn Duffy has told them is happening, who is secretly working for Raylan. And while Markham is quite upset about Boyd putting a damper on his engagement party, he is slightly more ticked once Raylan suggests that Hale is really helping out Boyd. Raylan is playing everyone like a game of chess, and nobody trusts each other. Genius.

As for Ava, the headquarters over in Lexington has had enough and plans to throw her in jail once they finally get Boyd. Olyphant has always done as exceptional job on this show and this episode gave him a challenge on whether or not to tell Ava about what is in store once she fulfills her end of the deal. Which of course he does tell her, but when you watch the scene you notice Raylan feeling a little guilty about her situation, which is something you don’t ever see with Raylan. This whole season Ava and Raylan have been going back and forth with one another sort of going back on their storied past and when push comes to shove you see that they each have a soft spot for one another.

Once Boyd knew that Avery wasn’t really moving the money he went straight for Hale and took her by gunpoint. And when a deal was reached Avery went out and met them with the money. Once he gave up the money, Boyd told Markham all about Hale’s intentions and left them in the dust. Hell of a way to end a partnership. How will Markham handle Katherine now?

The new introduced character Boone, is an interesting match for Raylan for the end of the show. The scene in the coffee shop when he was making waves with the coffee bartender (That’s dearly departed Gareth from the Walking Dead for those of you paying attention) had his character bordering on the fine line of dangerous and creepy. He is written in such a way to make you wonder just how twisted he is and to what lengths he’ll go to just to get what he wants. Anyways, he should make a nice little showdown for Raylan before the end of the show.

We now run into the final three episodes and the tables have flipped again. Raylan is hunting Ava down and Boyd is now out of men and has another scar — only this time it’s from the woman he so loves. How will Boyd react once he is healed? Will Ava go down in a blaze of glory if cornered? “Trust” capitalized with a lot this week by building up the tension. Lots more to come with this new twist.
