Notable Openings This Weekend: Jurassic World

It’s been a while, but I’m back with Box Office Predictions!  I may have been in hiding after my Mad Max $65 Million/Pitch Perfect 2 $35 Million calls.  I forgot Mad Max was rated R though, otherwise my prediction would have been different.  I’m glad to see that movie doing well though.  In my Top 10 Summer Box Office Predictions, I also had Tomorrowland and Entourage in the Top 10.  Yikes.  Talk about flops.  We’re not here to relive the past though.  We’re here to talk about Jurassic World, which tries to…relive the past.  I like the first Jurassic Park fine, but was never a huge fan.  I was initially curious about this one, but after seeing one trailer I got all the information I needed: An under water T-Rex.  Pterodactyls lifting people off the ground.  Flat as hell acting.  I’d rather watch the old nineties show, Dinosaurs.  Yeah, not looking forward to this one, but I know a lot of people are.  They’ll enter the theater with hopes held high, just as they did the last two films, but the let down is inevitable.  It is a Jurassic Park sequel after all.

The last Jurassic Park movie came out in 2001 (Jurassic Park III).  It did fine, but clearly people were getting fed up with the franchise.  Time off for Jurassic Park has only been good, and this fourth movie is basically being billed as the true sequel to the original.  It seems we are entering a new trend of let’s do a sequel directly after the one people like, and forget the continuity of the other bad ones.  We’ll be seeing this with Terminator: Genisys and Neill Blomkamp’s Alien film.  Despite two disappointing films in a row, fans seem ready to dive back into the world.

The trailers and reviews have been a collective “it’s fine.”   The fate of Jurassic World has already been written in that it’s not the original, but better than the sequels.  Whoopty doo.  That should be good enough for a big time opening weekend though, and probably one of the best of the summer.

HOW WILL IT ALL BREAK DOWN…

Roooarrrr.  The dinosaurs do well.

1. Jurassic World — $100 Million

2. Spy — $17 Million

3. San Andreas — $13.5 Million

4. Insidious Chapter 3 — $12.5 Million

5. Entourage — $5.5 Million
