Asbury Surf Music Interview: Dentist

asmfheader

We’re proud to be one of the sponsors of the second annual Asbury Park Surf Music Festival. The fest will be taking place on Saturday July 11th at the world famous Asbury Lanes in, you guessed it, Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Dentist, one of the hottest bands in the Asbury scene (and branching out further and further these days) will be making their fest debut this Saturday. It seems like only yesterday that Dentist was the band we all needed to be on the look out for. Now, they’re the reigning kings and queen of the scene – headlining venues all over the city, and opening for some serious national headliners. We recently caught up with Justin Bornemann to talk about the band’s success, joining the fest this year, and the type of drink they love with hibachi.

We interviewed you guys a year ago, right about the time when your last record came out. Can you talk about how the band has grown, and evolved since we last spoke with you?

We’ve written a lot more songs since then and are working on a new record. I think we’ve gotten tighter from playing a lot of shows.

You recently opened for JEFF the Brotherhood in DC, tell us about that gig and how you landed such a sweet gig?

What sticks out about that gig was how well we were treated. They have people that carry all your stuff in and park your vehicle for you, and they were all really nice too. We also got free food and drinks and were paid decently. The show was awesome too, but whenever we talk about it we tend to bring up the perks because we don’t usually get any.

What do you love about being in Dentist?

Meeting new people and other bands when we play a show. Also, being creative and writing music.

There’s an endless sea of surf bands, and bands influenced by the surf sound — what separates you guys from everyone else?

Hopefully something. We just try to write the kind of music that we would like to listen to. Our band has a lot of influences that aren’t surf music like 90’s indie rock and punk, so hopefully we end up with something that is a bit unique.

You’ll be performing at the Asbury Surf Music Fest this year – what drew you to take part in the fest?

We played some shows with The Black Flamingos and got to know those guys a bit. Vin asked us to take part at one of the shows we played with them or right after, and we jumped at the chance, because it seems like such a cool show.

What is it about surf music that inspired you to form a band and play this type of music?

We love that kind of music and probably have listened to a lot of it. We more or less fell into it naturally. The kind of songs we write easily go in that direction and we just started doing it, but not every song we have is a surf song.

What is the ultimate surf rock anthem of all-time, and why?

‘Walk Don’t Run,’ by The Ventures maybe. There’s a lot of great stuff by Dick Dale too.

What is your ultimate go-to surf-inspired/beachy style drink (e.g. Mai-Tai, Zombie, Margarita, a specific beer, etc.)?

Margarita’s are the best, but every time Emily gets hibachi she gets a Zombie. It’s a tradition.

What are you most excited about for the band for the rest of 2015?

Finishing our new record.
