Written by veteran Star Trek comic author Mike Johnson, The Spectrum War is a six part miniseries. IDW and DC Entertainment have teamed up and brought together their equally strong interstellar characters to create an electrifying galactic experience. The Spectrum War is the crossover event of a lifetime bringing together the crew of the Enterprise and the Green Lantern corps.

The first issue began on the sentient, yet now dead, planet Mogo where Ganthet is being swarmed by lantern rings of different colors. An an unknown, but without a doubt extra evil, villain is chasing Ganthet. The villain thinks he has won, however Ganthet transports to “another time” and “another universe.” We are then introduced to our Star Trek characters who find a rogue planet and decide to explore. There they find a skeleton (most probably Ganthet) and the lantern rings.

As Scotty experiments and researches the lantern rings and Bones inspects the body, the Enterprise is hailed by another ship. It is Chang from Kronos who looks to take Kirk back to his people for disrespecting the Klingon empire. As Chang and his troops prepare to board the Enterprise, the lantern rings activate and choose four people; Chang, Pavel Chekov, Nyota Uhura, and Leonard “Bones” McCoy.

The comic was well paced and interesting. Mike Johnson had a lot of set up to include in a short amount of space. He had two worlds to introduce plus all the characters and the storyline for the miniseries. I think he did a great job keeping the story moving and interesting while letting readers get adjusted to the crossover-ness of the issue.

I really enjoyed the first issue in The Spectrum War. Artist Angel Hernandez created beautiful panels that flowed well with story. He caught the likeness of the actors who now play the Star Trek crew impeccably. The set-up was fantastic and it ends with a cliffhanger. Fans of Green Lantern or Star Trek won’t be let down.
