In the Heart of the Sea Poster

Release Date: December 11th, 2015

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Ben Wishaw, Brendan Gleeson

Director: Ron Howard (Rush, Apollo 13, The DaVinci Code, Angels and Demons, Cinderella Man)

Pre-Trailer Thoughts: Chris Hemsworth fills in time between Thor stuff and sets out to tackle a whale. This is apparently the true story basis for the saga of Moby Dick. –LJF

Pre-Trailer Thoughts: Ron Howard has always had an ability to deftly blend large spectacle with humanizing drama in films like Rush, Apollo 13, and Backdraft. In the Heart of the Sea will be his take on the true story of Moby Dick, and he’ll be trying to marry the drama of the crew of a whaling ship with the action of a massive shipwreck. Outside of Rush Howard hasn’t exactly had a good track record over the past few years (Thanks mainly to the incredibly boring Da Vinci Code movies), but hopefully this puts him on the right track. – JTM

Rate the Trailer: 2 out of 5. I don’t know what it is with me and guys having adventures on boats in movies, but they never have really appealed to me. I think it’s the same reason that I don’t dig swimming levels in video games-I just don’t appreciate a massive amount of water in entertainment. In any case, the trailer visually does look stunning, but that whale looks a little rough around the edges when it comes to the CGI. Overall, it looks boring. –LJF

Rate the Trailer: 4 out of 5. This movie really does have an amazing look about it, with colors washed out in such a way that each frame looks like it could be from a 19th century oil painting. Scenes of the shipwreck look to be incredibly intense and do an amazing job of giving the viewer a scale of the gargantuan size of the whale that attacks them. The special effects and cinematography are gorgeous and will likely be Oscar-contenders in their categories. Chris Hemsworth and Cillian Murphy are fantastic actors who fit right in with the look of the time period. Hemsworth did great work with Howard before in Rush, and its great to see an actor mainly known for this action roles find a director who can bring out his best work. – JTM

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? No Thanks. I really have no interest in Heart of the Sea, especially with such a packed fall season already that showcases better looking movies. This “original” Moby Dick just doesn’t look all that appealing in my opinion. –LJF

Theater, Rent, Undecided, No Thanks? Rent. A crowded season at the box office is the only real reason I’ll wait to watch this later on. Ron Howard specifically delayed the release of the film to be closer to awards season after early reviews were so positive, and that’s as sure a sign as any that this will be worth watching at some point. – JTM

In the Heart of the Sea sets sail on December 11th, 2015
