Pre-Trailer Thoughts: The Lobster was brought to my attention by fellow Pop-Break staff member Alfred Mannarino. I knew nothing about it beforehand if I’m to be totally honest. -LJF
Pre-Trailer Thoughts: A critical darling and Jury Prize winner at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, The Lobster has been getting great reviews as it’s been released in other countries. The film, from Dogtooth director Yorgos Lanthimos, it’s finally getting a theatrical release in America next month. With stars like Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz, it’s going to be interesting to see how the bizarre comedy-drama will do over here. – JTM
Rate the Trailer: 4 out of 5. I will say this for the film-it seems completely 100% original and I do enjoy that fact. We are so bogged down by sequels, reboots, blockbusters, and remakes these days that a film that is purely unique needs to come out into the open. The Lobster seems to be sort of a Wes Anderson creation; it’s a comedy that isn’t an in your face comedy, and deals with interesting content in a strange way. Ultimately, the trailer is engaging, and while it won’t do big numbers, the film hopefully will find an audience.-LJF
Rate the Trailer: 4 out of 5. A mix of a black comedy and romantic drama, The Lobster shows us a strange world where those who do not fall in love are turned into the animal of their choosing. The film has a beautifully gloomy look, with nothing but overcast skies dominating the otherwise gorgeous countryside landscapes. Lanthimos has a very reserved directorial style, and it plays well here as the focus is directed more towards the personal conflicts of the characters rather than focusing on the fantasy elements of the plot. Colin Farrell looks almost unrecognizable with a slight gut, librarian glasses and small mustache, while I was also pleasantly surprised to see John C Reilly show up as well. I really did love the look and feel of the trailer, as it gave a great sense of comedy shining through in an otherwise bleak situation. – JTM
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent. I do want to see this film for sheer curiosity, as I think it needs support. However, I do think it will be in limited release upon its debut, so its safe to say a rental is my best bet.-LJF
Theater, Rent, Undecided, No Thanks? Theater. It will likely be getting a smaller release than most films we talk about here, but I really am hoping that a theater somewhat close to me will be playing it one it’s released in the US. – JTM
