Release Date: April 8th, 2016

Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage, Kristen Schaal, Kathy Bates

Director: Ben Falcone (Tammy)

Pre-Trailer Thoughts: Directed by the husband of star Melissa McCarthy, The Boss features the actresses doing what she does best: vulgar, slap-sticky humor. McCarthy has capitalized on this acting trait and while I don’t mind her whatsoever (she is able to draw laughs out of me), I’m thinking she is quickly becoming typecast even though this is a character she herself created. –LJF

Pre-Trailer Thoughts: Even though Spy was a pleasant surprise last year, I’m still wary of Melissa McCarthy comedies thank to the absolutely abysmal Tammy. Making me even more worried is that Spy was mostly the work of writer and director Paul Feig, while The Boss is written by McCarthy and directed by her husband Ben Falcone just as Tammy was. Maybe Tammy was just a huge misstep by a comedic couple and The Boss will set things right though? – JTM

Rate the trailer: 2 out of 5. The Boss looks entertaining enough. While I didn’t laugh that much at the trailer, maybe they are saving the better gags for the film itself. Overall, I wasn’t that impressed with the jokes, although the girl scout battle was pretty funny.-LJF

Rate the Trailer: 3 out of 5. This looks to be far, far, far less annoying than any part of Tammy, but a lot of the comedy still didn’t click with me the way I had hoped it would. McCarthy’s Michelle Darnelle character is one she has apparently been developing for years and years since she got her start in comedy, so it’s nice to see she has a great grasp on what she wants to get out of this character. The trailers focus on physical gags and the more risque jokes falls a bit flat, but I’m hoping the actual film will take the main character’s white-collar crime background and delve into some biting satire on white-collar crime. I was gearing up for a Tammy-esque disaster, but instead was thankfully just a little underwhelmed by it all. – JTM

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent. The Boss would probably be a harmless watch on a weekend evening. I wouldn’t be against viewing it. My lady digs McCarthy so it’s possible future Redbox material. -LJF

Theater, Rent, Undecided, No Thanks? Undecided. I’m going to wait and see what the reviews are like for this one. I don’t think anyone was really expecting Spy to be all that great, but a lot of reviewers I trust gave it glowing reviews and that convinced me to see it. After that, I’m more than willing to give The Boss the chance to also be a surprise sleeper hit. – JTM
