Notable Openings This Weekend: Captain America: Civil War

Oh, yes.  Do you know what that sound means?  The summer movie season has begun!  This is the time of year where people show up three hours in advance to theaters in an effort to avoid front row seats.  As is usually the case, the first summer movie weekend in May is always the biggest, and it doesn’t get much bigger than this one – Captain America: Civil War.  There’s no beating around the bush.  There’s no overly complicated preambles.  Let’s just do it.  How much money will this behemoth rake in?

I’ve always been notoriously low when predicting MCU films.  Not this time.  While I declared this movie the #1 money maker in my Summer Preview column, I already look like a moron for saying $385 Million domestic.  I’m an idiot.  It’s going to steam roll that number.  There’s no stopping this train.  The reviews are insane.  The hype is off the charts.  And unlike DC films, MCU movies seem incapable of disappointing, or letting the fanboys down.  I’ve talked ad nauseam about how the MCU is overrated, it drives me nuts, blah, blah, blah, but it doesn’t matter.  I originally thought this would essentially average what Captain America: Winter Soldier (just over $95 Million opening weekend) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (just over $191 Million opening weekend) did.  Not only do I think it’s going to blow past that number, but it has an outside chance at dethroning Star Wars: The Force Awakens for all time opening weekend record.  Yeah, I went there.

Do I think that’s going to happen?  No, I don’t.  Just under $248 Million dollars is a completely ludicrous number.  The fact we’re even talking about it though tells you everything you need to know.  What else am I supposed to say at this point?  Not only is this weekend notorious for brining in massive box office, but it’s a Marvel movie that presents so many intriguing story lines.  Captain America Vs. Iron Man.  Black Panther gets introduced.  Heroes Vs. Heroes.  Oh yeah, and the whole Spider-Man thing   Alright, I could ramble on all day, but let’s just get to the damn predictions!

HOW WILL IT ALL BREAK DOWN…

Captain America’s shield will be dipped into a giant barrel of gold and blast through $200 Million.  Will it beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens?  No, but it takes the crown from The Avengers as the most successful MCU opening of all time.

1. Captain America: Civil War – $225 Million

2. The Jungle Book – $28 Million

3. Keanu – $6.5 Million

4. The Huntsman: Winter’s War – $5.5 Million

5. Mother’s Day – $4.5 Million
