Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. are reprising their creative duo to bring back a new “Kick-Ass” series, only this time they’re retiring title star and altar ego David Lizewski.

According to Hollywood Reporter, “Kick-Ass: The New Girl” will see an unnamed, new black female protagonist don the green and yellow.

This series along with a new “Hit-Girl” spin-off, illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque, is planned for release January as ongoing monthly series. The aforementioned series, as well as an unrelated new project entitled “Reborn” slated for October, will be firsts in Millar’s creator-owned endeavors.

“Comics is not short of white males aged around 30; that demographic seems pretty well catered for in popular culture,” said Millar. “I don’t think many blonde white guys around 30 feel under-represented when they pick up comic or watch a movie. Being older or younger or female or African-American just seems more interesting to me as a writer because this character is quite unique and opens up story possibilities that hasn’t been tried in almost eighty years of superhero fiction. This woman has a completely different take on Kick-Ass.”

The new Kick-Ass series will be in a completely different city with a new cast of supporting characters. Romita Jr. reunites with Millar after working under an exclusive deal with DC illustrating Superman and the upcoming All-Star Batman. Millar states that Romita has “committed” to work on Kick-Ass for three years, all of which Millar plans to write.

Artist Rafael Albuquerque is also working under the DC Rebirth’s “Batgirl.” The artist informs Newsarama he is illustrating both series concurrently and has already completed the first three issues of Batgirl, but describes his run on that series as being six issues in length, which without fill-ins would take him through December’s Batgirl #6. Former Wolverine writer Daniel Way will reportedly take over the Hit-Girl writing duties from Millar after the first arc and Millar described Albuquerque as the ongoing series’ regular artist.
