Review: Injustice 2 #1

Written by M.J. Rawls

In January 2013, the Injustice: Gods Among Us comic was released after first being announced by Ed Boon to serve as a companion to the video game. Set in a different universe, it showed what would become of Earth if Superman lost the things he loved the most. Some of our favorite super heroes and villains in the DC Universe picked sides, which resulted in Superman ultimately being defeated. Of course, the story could not end there as Injustice 2 was announced in June 2016.

The first issue of the new story picks up with Superman in his cell having a conversation with Batman. Throughout their history, the friendship between Batman and Superman has been rather rigid. Going back to the events that lead up to the first part of the Injustice story line happening, Clark lost both Lois and his child which sent him down this totalitarian path. In writing this issue, this is where Tom Taylor shines. Although he went down a dark path, there’s a human element to Superman that you sympathize with given that his word was shattered at the hand of The Joker. There’s also the matter of putting the world back together – how do you even start from scratch? Given Batman’s

Here you have two men that both have the greater good in mind, whatever the “good” may constitute as.
Superman even reminds Batman of those he lost (Alfred, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, etc.) to try to show that there is some common bond in lost. That’s quickly discarded with a jarring insult that would make anyone cringe given the content. This fracture is going to come to a head one away or another.

That’s the main course; the stories surrounding the main characters such as Harley Quinn and Dr. Fate’s visit to another Earth for a message to Green Arrow and Black Canary are more appetizers. These elements try to move certain pieces of the Injustice story into play.

Harley Quinn serves as the brief comic relief trying to cement herself as the new Robin. Dr. Fate tells both Green Arrow and Black Canary that the job is not quite done yet.

The integration of Amanda Waller and Suicide Squad are introduced to supplement the big twist at the end of the comic. All in all, everything serves as a warm up acting as an conductor for the second part of Injustice itself.
