Berserk Season 2 Episode 7: The Arcana of Invocation

OK, so I don’t know if many of you readers have been watching the new season of Berserk, but it has been slooooooow. Like, Goku creating the Spirit Bomb slow. But the wait was well worth it. Because shit gets real in this episode. We also see possibly the derpiest demon Guts has ever faced, which just made me laugh every time it made its weird cow/demon noise. More importantly though, we see Guts take on a giant ogre by himself and Serpico steps up to the plate to fight the derp-demon, known as a “kelpie” so that Guts doesn’t have to fight two on one. The battle is now wind vs. water and brute strength vs. brute strength. We really get to see what Serpico is capable of with his new abilities. I mean, we already knew he was a badass. He’s the only human thus far who has truly matched Guts in skill and now he basically has super powers.

Schierke also shows us just how powerful she is. Every good band of traveling heroes needs a mage, and I don’t think you’ll find one that can match Schierke. She may be young, but she is incredibly powerful. On the other hand, Ishidoro is having an existential crisis and realizing how useless he has been this entire fight. He is almost more useless than Casca and Farnese for this battle. Farnese, though, does have some really good parts showing her growing development into not a shit-tier individual.

Guts and Schierke have an adorable father to daughter type moment, which while we have seen the big brother relationship he has with Ishidoro, he isn’t as hard on Schierke like he is Ishidoro. This could be because of her power, because she’s a girl, or because Ishidoro is basically his trainee and Schierke is not. Either way, it’s always good to see more dynamics of Guts’s character.

The thing I didn’t really care for was Schierke explaining the spirits she was calling on and how they were the same ones from the Holy See scripture several times. It was at least 3 times that she explained what these things were and what she was doing but in different ways. I get it. You’re a mage, you’re close to the spirit world, blah blah blah, religious differences but they’re actually the same.

Overall score: 9/10

This episode was the action we have been waiting for and it sets us up for even more action in the next episode as Guts and crew must enter the troll lair to save Casca and Farnese. I’m so pumped.
