Review: Rat Queens Vol 2 #4

Written by Sheena Fisher

In case you missed issue 3 the Rat Queens enlisted a new member in the form of a bad ass lady Orc, Braga. Violet’s brother, Barrie, met up with them as well. Barrie sort of stole his twin sister’s party by forming his own deeming them the Cat Kings. The Cat Kings are formed of a weird mushroom kid, a wizard, Violet’s brother, and a dude that can grow mushrooms. Don’t worry, it gets better and stranger.

We meet back up with Violet and Barrie. He’s giving her crap but explains that he isn’t trying to get back anything back she stole from the family (previous issue plot point). There’s a cute mushy heart-warming moment then the 2 groups decide to do a dungeon crawl together. As they arrive, Dee senses something very familiar about this dungeon. And, through a short flashback we can see why.

But, with all dungeons there’s always a locked door. The wizard on team Cat King’s is trying very carefully to open said door. While my girl Hannah does the reasonable thing and blasts a hole in the wall beside the door. Of course this infuriates the wizard because he wants to preserve history, and he storms off. Shortly after all the Cat Kings decide this dungeon is too much for them and they follow the wizard. Our girls, The Rat Queens, enjoy a challenge and treasure so they continue onward.

As our Queens are facing perils in the dungeon Hannah and Braga are reflecting on their childhoods. The funny thing is they’re working together now even though their pasts would have seemingly never led to this current path. Of course as plot is happening, action starts to happen. Betty sets off a trap trying to steal some bling and the Queens end up falling into a deeper part of the dungeon.

Here you get to see more of the queens working together to overcome perils of the dungeon. You also get to see Violet very rudely try to open a living treasure chest. Not cool, you can’t just go opening people’s mouths all willy-nilly like that. Why would you do that to a living magical treasure chest? Oh wait…I would have done the same thing.

This issue closes with our girls walking through a mysterious magical mirror. The mystery is where exactly have they all been transported to? I have adored Volume 2 of Rat Queens so far. The writers do a great job of character development, and the characters also are super relatable to me. Well, if you take away the fact that some have magical powers. The plot points mix well with the action. Got to rate issue #4 a solid

Review: 9/10.
