Review: Sheena of the Jungle #0

By: Sheena Fisher

We kick this tale off with Sheena protecting over the jungle. In the Amazon you must be swift and ready to fight at any point. Sheena is watching over the jungle in the trees when she notices something. She steadies her bow and prepares to fire. “The flying turtle thinks it has gone unnoticed.” She shoots.

Of course our brave protector and Queen of the Jungle hits her flying turtle target. Unfortunately it lands in a sacred temple. Sheena quickly dashes from the tree to survey the damage. She doesn’t hesitate to enter the temple that clearly hasn’t been touched by humans for hundreds of years. As Sheena enters she apologizes to the ancients for her intrusion. She understands how important this temple is and will do everything in her power to protect its history.

As Sheena avoids booby-traps in the temple she finds remnants of a camera as well as the drone (flying turtle). She knows all of these things are from cowodi (outsiders). Sheena also seems to understand what this tech could do for uncovering the temple. This discovery could spell trouble for the jungle. She grabs the flying turtle and makes her epic escape out avoiding poisonous plants trying to eat her. Once she gets to the surface she sees another flying turtle, and we see a person on the other side watching her in amazement.

Ok, so I have been reading Sheena of the Jungle since I can remember thanks to my dad. He had comics and of course the terrible movie. I can say that this version of her so far has been my favorite. Sheena is meant to be a protector, and even though she’s not the smartest with technology, she’s ridiculously intelligent and great at overcoming difficulties. Both of those important things shined brightly in in this version. In some of the past versions I’ve seen she’s sometimes dumbed down even though she’s obviously the hero. My only small complaint is the story set-up is predictable, but I also get that the writers are introducing her as well as leading us somewhere with this tale. I think it’s a great thing that the writers chose to take this approach to bring the story into 2017. I look forward to the next issue. So, with all that being said I have to rate this issue 8.5/10
