Season 12 begins with the return of Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith), the long deceased mother of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). Sam has been rescued by Mary and Dean from a kidnapping by a member of the British Men of Letters, a group that Mary would soon join forces with under the guise of saving the world from demons and other evil forces. Unbeknownst to her, the British Men of Letters aren’t what they seem.

While Mary is off with the BMOL, Sam, Dean, and their angel friend Castiel (Misha Collins) are tracking Lucifer, who has taken the body of the President of the United States and has impregnated a staff member named Kelly (Courtney Ford). Now pregnant with the son of the devil, Kelly is being hunted by both the Winchester’s and Lucifer, himself.

While protecting Kelly and the baby from Lucifer, the Winchester’s find that while you cannot destroy Lucifer, you can slow him down. They open a portal to another dimension and are successful in throwing Lucifer inside, only to lose their mother in the portal and to see Castiel stabbed before their eyes. Kelly has died in childbirth and Sam and Dean are left to protect the son of Lucifer.

Collins plays Castiel, an angel of God and best friend of Sam and Dean Winchester. He is an important member of the group as he has not only saved the Winchester’s lives on multiple occasions, but has also brought the brothers back to life more than once. His angel powers have both helped stop and create the apocalypse but, ultimately, the Winchester’s wouldn’t be anything without him. Castiel’s weakness: Sam and Dean.
