So, this is a case of good news, bad news.

The good news is this — HBO, in a press release, officially confirmed when Game of Thrones will return for its eighth and final season.

The bad news is … it’ll be in 2019.

Now, we all kind of figured this, right? We knew, that unless the show had episodes (or parts of episodes) in the can already, and effects work had already started, that it was unlikely we’d see GOT back for 2018.

This was even further cemented when HBO released its 2018 sizzle reel, and there were no ice dragons to be found anywhere.

HBO also cemented that the final season will be six episodes long, something that had been long rumored since before Season 7’s release.

So yes, there will be no Jon Snow, no white walkers, no dragons vs. ice dragons, and most importantly no shipping of Tormud and Brienne in 2018.

To make thing indubitably (see what we did there?) cloudier, is that we do not have an actual premiere date yet. Just 2019.

The show historically premieres in April, except for last season’s mid-July release. So, your guess is as good as ours on when the final season will premiere.

HBO also confirmed the directors and a writers for this season.

Directors for the new season are: David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik.

Writers for the new season are: David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill.

While this news isn’t melting the frigid veneer of the Night King, it’s always a good day when you get a bit of Game of Thrones news.
