Ann Hale – American Horror Story: Freak Show

American Horror Story: Freak Show aired its finale this month and though many viewers weren’t fans of this season, I was. As many said, Freak Show didn’t have a conclusion to look forward to. Twisty the Clown (John Carroll Lynch) died early in the season and we learned his backstory and replacement immediately upon his death. The other villains in the episode died before the finale, leaving only one possibility of an ending and it was a predictable one.

Why was I watching if it was that bad? It wasn’t. In fact, Freak Show had the best theme of all of the seasons: “We Are All Freaks.” The problem was simply that no one took the time to recognize it.

In a time where discrimination has, once again, become so prevalent, Freak Show recognizes that no one person is perfect. Whether we are gay, deformed, mentally disabled, minority, pinheaded or even something so simple as a snaggle tooth or twisted toe, we are united in our freakishness. Ryan Murphy made the world fall in love with Pepper (Naomi Grossman) by showing that behind her rough exterior was a sweet, innocent person who just wanted to love. The world was able to see past her deformity and relate to her. This is what “We Are All Freaks” means. You cannot judge on the deformity or differences, you must judge each individual based on the kind of person they are because someone may be unfairly judging you for your differences as well.

Freak Show started out with a bang and finished with a fizzle but its moral stayed strong and, for that, it was one of my favorite seasons of them all.
