‘The Bachelorette’ Season 16 Episode 2 Review: Strip Dodgeball … Yeah This Was a Bad Episode

Before we get started, I know we all didn’t know what to expect when it came to the dates since they can’t really leave the resort, and I hope they’re saving the best for last because this episode was a complete joke and honestly extremely boring to watch. Something I learned about Clare from The Bachelorette Season 16 Episode 2 is that it seems like she needs constant adoration. She also needs things to go exactly her way otherwise she gets pissed off. She’s basically a princess and from this episode alone I know this season is going to be a wreck. She’s already figured out the guy she’s going to pick (Dale) and unless someone surprises her, I can’t see her even opening up to the other guys.

Date 1 – Group Date

Participants – Riley, Jordan, Yosef, Ivan, Ben, Bennett, Zac C, Zach J, Dale

Prompt – I’m looking for a guy who speaks to my heart

This was one of the most awkward first group dates I’ve ever seen. This whole date was revolving around the different love languages. The first thing the men had to do was profess their feelings to her, while she stood in a faux castle window. First of all, it’s really awkward to really open up in front of these other men especially so early in the show. The next thing the men had to do was find a sentimental gift and give it to her. And lastly, and mostly awkwardly, Clare and each of the men put on blindfolds and touched each other. It’s one of those random dates they do on the bachelor and bachelorette that’s awkward to watch, but usually it’s a one-on-one but the thing that made this worse was that every other guy had a front-stage view of the action. It was really weird.

And when I thought the worst and most awkward part of the date was over, I was wrong. They got to the cocktail party portion of the date and all sat down together. It got silent for a few seconds before Clare asked one of the guys to steal her away. You read that correctly… she asked one of them to steal her away during the first date of the season. So, Bennett, being the gentleman that he is, pulled her away and they went to talk for a bit. Unfortunately, Clare couldn’t get over the fact that none of the other men wanted to pull her away and she basically threw a hissy fit. She stormed back to the other guys and told them how upset she was. Some of the other guys offered to take up time with her, but she turned them away until Dale offered.

Something that the other men mentioned that was interesting is that they said they didn’t know that’s how it worked. Now think about it, these men probably don’t watch the bachelor and know the protocol. Maybe one of the men could have known and made the first move and then the other men would have picked up on how it worked. But she very much set expectations for herself and then became disappointed when no one jumped at the opportunity, but here’s my theory. I think she was actually upset that Dale didn’t try to steal her away first. But the crazy thing is that as the bachelorette, she could have stolen him away first! She didn’t need to throw a tantrum when something she assumed would happen didn’t end up happening. Anyway, she didn’t calm down until Dale asked for some one on one time with her. Then she eventually got her alone time with all the guys. The date rose went to Riley.

Date 2 – Solo Date

Participant – Jason

Prompt – Love will set us free

This was an extraordinarily boring date. For their first date ever (they haven’t even done a group date together yet) they basically did a therapy session. They wrote a letter to their younger self, they screamed into the void, they listed things they wanted to let go of and then destroyed those lists, then they read the letters to their younger selves to each other. They also burned the dress that Clare wore on Juan Pablo’s season finale as a sign. It seems done because I feel like they could have auctioned it off and made money that could have went to a charity, but instead they used it for a bit on a date. This is one of the worst dates I’ve watched on this show… not just this season, but within all of the Bachelor and Bachelorette. He got the date rose.

Date 3 – Group Date

Prompt – I’m looking for a man with some balls (……sigh

Every season of the Bachelor and the Bachelorette has a group date that is revolved around sports. So, when I saw that Clare was doing a dodgeball group date, I wasn’t surprised. I was surprised when I found out in 2020 that this would be a strip-dodgeball game. The group was split up into two teams and the losing team had to remove an article of clothing every time they lost.

Again, I can’t believe I’m writing about this happening in 2020…

The blue team lost every round and they stripped down to their underwear, some of them took everything off. And one of the guys apologized for not wanting to take everything off and honestly, I was pretty mad at Clare, at the Bachelorette, and at abc for letting shit like this happen on tv. This would never happen if it was a Bachelor with a bunch of female contestants, so it shouldn’t be happening with Clare and a bunch of male contestants. Then, aside from just being embarrassed by losing and stripping down to their jock straps, the men were not allowed on the cocktail portion of the date and had to walk back to their rooms without their clothing. It’s shameful and unnecessary.

Blake Moynes was on the losing team and was sent home, but he got dressed and interrupted the cocktail party anyway. He interrupted Jay’s time with Clare, which did not vibe well with Jay or any of the other guys. So, like the Jets snapping their way into a gang fight, the rest of the men marched their way into Blake Moyne’s time with Clare. Blake got the hint and was going to leave, and here’s the brutal part, he leaned in to kiss Clare in front of the other guys and she pulled away from him and said “C’mon, you can’t go in for it right now” and she literally pushed him away. He walked out of that date with his tail between his legs.

Then she got some alone time with Brandon. Brandon claimed that he was so excited that she was the bachelorette and knew he had to be on the show for her. She asked the simple question “What made you want to be on here for me?” (because she loves hearing the men compliment her and tell her how great she is) but poor Brandon just answered incorrectly. He said she was gorgeous and that he didn’t know a lot about her. That confused her as well as the whole audience watching the show. Long story short, she got annoyed with him and sent him home. On his first date he was sent home. Is that a new record? Because it feels like a new record. She gave the group date rose to Jason.

Cocktail Party

She pulled Blake Moynes away first and said that she didn’t want him questioning anything and she gave a rose to him right then and there. The other men were not too happy about Blake Moynes being rewarded for cutting into a date he wasn’t invited to. Of course, Clare got her one-on-one time with Dale. She even got one of the blindfolds from the first date, put it on him, and then made out with him. I think Clare is just a horny 39-year-old woman trying to get it as soon as possible.

They closed out The Bachelorette Season 16 Episode 2 by previewing next week’s episode. Looks like the rose ceremony won’t be till next week.
