Pop-Ed: Our Favorite Friends Moments

Lauren Stern: When I sat down to write my contribution to this piece, the first question that popped into my head was “Which Friends episode should I choose?” Each season of the iconic television show was so great in different ways, that it’s hard to pick just one end-all-be-all favorite. After grappling over my decision, I decided to look it at like this: If I was trapped on a desert island with food, water, a television, and a CD with one episode on it, which would it be?

That made it even more difficult. So instead of just coping out and saying “They are all amazing! This was the best show on TV and it always will be!” I decided to reluctantly choose “The One Where No One’s Ready.” In this episode, Ross has an important paleontology event to go to, but no one is ready. The best part of the episode and one of the most memorable Friends moments for me was Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Chandler’s (Matthew Perry) fight over a really comfortable chair. At one point in the fight, Chandler hides Joey’s underwear, and steals back the chair. In retribution, Joey goes into their apartment and puts on all of Chandler’s clothes. When he comes out, he says one of my favorite lines, “You hide my clothes? I’m wearing everything you own.” Then he starts doing stretches and says, “Hey look, I’m Chandler, can I be wearing anymore clothes? Maybe if I wasn’t going commando!” Every time I think or see that part in a repeat, I lose it laughing.

Another great quote that makes this episode so memorable is when Chandler says “You know what’s weird? Donald Duck never wore pants, but whenever getting out of the shower, he wraps a towel around his waist. What’s that about?” I firmly believe this is arguably the best one liner from the entire series. It was said so randomly, and it was so incredibly insightful, especially for a jokester like Chandler. I can never not think of Friends without thinking of that line.

So there you have it — my official favorite Friends moment. Well, at least for the time being anyway. I’m sure I will see an episode on syndication tonight and think “Damn it! I should have chose that one!” This show was the epitome of the saying “all good things must come to an end.” To be honest, when I see something about the 20th anniversary, I kind of wish we were celebrating the fact that it was still on the air, much like we do with The Simpsons.
