Review: Supergirl #13

In the Supergirl Annual we saw how devious Emerald Empress can be. If you haven’t read the annual there are some mild spoilers from it coming up. Emerald Empress has it out for Supergirl. She has even go so far as to ruin Supergirl’s reputation by showing DEO footage on the CATCO app. This issue picks up with them fiercely facing off.

Emerald Empress and her lackeys are causing chaos at the DEO and the scabbard while she and Supergirl fight in the middle of National City. We learned in issue 12 that Empress’s father was murdered. She believes that Supergirl is the culprit. Empress is calling Supergirl out on her future crimes. It is clear Kara is in shock to learn this. While this is going on Ben and Cat are fighting a battle together on their computer. Ben is working hard to make sure Empress can’t use the CATCO app to leak anything else to make Supergirl look worse.

How can Emerald Empress be here if the events happen centuries in the future? As the fight intensifies and some terrible words are shared between the two Supergirl figures out how Empress is anchored to this timeline. The thing that Empress didn’t calculate well about Supergirl? That Supergirl never gives up. Civilians nearby are terrified that Supergirl has turned on them thanks to the CATCO app sharing video footage of Kara talking to her father. Did I mention he’s also floating around nearby in stasis still?

Mild spoiler for this issue, but I’m sure you all knew this is where the story was headed. Supergirl figures out the eye is keeping Emerald Empress in the present. She bursts it and Emerald Empress disappears in a puff of green smoke. Indigo picks up where Emerald Empress left off. Indigo still believes that Supergirl is the bad guy after all of this. To make matters worse Kara’s dad is waking up. The citizens are scared. That’s all I’ll reveal for this issue.

It’s nice that the annual played a part in the story line leading into issue 13. It’s also nice to have some closure on some characters, villains mainly. And, something pretty tragic happens in this issue that I didn’t go into because huge spoiler guys. I really hope you pick this one up at your local comic shop. Lots of turning points happen for our main characters that I didn’t even touch on. Things are looking bright for Supergirl’s future. For now, at least.
