Review: Justice League #1

Justice League is published by DC Comics. It is written by Scott Snyder with art by Jim Cheung.

I want to start off by saying how much I love the way Scott Snyder set this up. As soon as I got to page 2, I saw the white building with giant letters that read “Hall of Justice”, and I was reminded of the times when my brother and I were little at our grandma’s house, where we would watch the old Super Friends TV show re-runs. I could hear the narrator’s voice in my head saying, “Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice…” and in that moment I knew I was going to enjoy this comic.

The comic starts off with a warning. A future, a present, and a past. The way things could turn out, something only Martian Manhunter has any knowledge of (though even his knowledge is limited). A threat is coming, a mystery that no one really even understands. Is it a sentient being? Is it a power? All the Justice League knows is that it’s dangerous. Martian Manhunter struggles with self-doubt and fear of what’s to come, all while doing his best to protect his friends, his family, from total destruction. However, the heroes aren’t the only ones trying to access this mystery, and a comic can’t include the Hall of Justice without the Legion of Doom.

For people who have read his other works, Scott Snyder tends to have a bit of a…well, dark and somewhat heavy, style of writing, which is probably what makes him such a great writer for Batman. Justice League is different though, these characters aren’t all dark and brooding, so I was curious as to how he would approach them. From what I’ve seen so far, I feel like he will do just fine. Especially considering we get two pages of the other members saying things in a “Batman voice” and deciding who does a better job. The lightheartedness balances well with the destruction and death. I was immediately excited to see that Kendra Saunders is the current Hawkgirl, which is amazing because she is my favorite Hawkgirl (sorry, Shayera Hol, you will always be special to me because of the Justice League animated series, but Kendra). Oh, and also that John Stewart is this Justice League’s Green Lantern.

The series seems like its going to be a bit more focused on J’onn than the others. This first issue was at least. We get to see his dragon form, always a big plus. I’m totally on board with a J’onn focused arc, he deserves the love, however, his abilities when it comes to time, past, present, and future, are a little confusing. I don’t really understand how he knows what he knows. I don’t really understand why he kept some very important information to himself because I guess if he doesn’t say it then it will just cease to be a problem? Certain things don’t make sense. It could also be that I’m just not getting it…it’s quite possible. Either way, this comic is one you should without a doubt you pick up.

OVERALL SCORE: 9 / 10

Make sure you pick up a copy of Justice League #1 from you local comic shop! Happy reading!
