This review will have spoilers from the end of Issue #1. If you have yet to read issue #1 please hold off on reading this review.
So, at the end of the first issue Vep was given an opportunity to leave the colony. A tourist saw her heroics in saving a friend and thought he could use her abilities. This issue picks up with Vep waking up in a strange organic pod on a space ship. The entire ship is a living creature named the Therassen.
As Vep awakens from her stasis in the pod she can see Svervamad, the small asteroid she was living on with her family. For the first time she can really see just how small it is, and she wants to go back to see her family again. But, she can’t seem to speak for some reason quite yet. She’s escorted to a bigger lobby area in the Therassen.
Here we find out a little bit more about how the Therassen functions. They’re a living creature, a giant squid that travels through space. When going at high speeds it absorbs its passengers for comfort. While Vep is absorbed we see a flashback to her speaking with her family. I guess she did get to say goodbye before she started on this journey. Vep hops that she will find her family a new home since the aliens she worked for aren’t really looking.
After a long journey Vep and the rest of the crew is let off at The Academy. Here Vep must go through tests to see if she is what they’re looking for. I wonder what happens if someone is found to be incompatible. Fortunately we don’t need to know for now. Vep passes the tests and is deemed compatible. I can’t divulge how the test worked, and what was revealed here.
There are so many different types of species from many different planets at The Academy. This planet is huge and full of color and life. All of this gives Vep hope that she can and will find her tribe a new place to live. Once she passes the tests she gets to meet some of her class mates. And, of course Vep meets the leader of The Academy.
Up until this point I wasn’t sure what the purpose was of this facility. But, its purpose is explained well in this issue. After learning the purpose of the Academy, Vep certainly feels like a great fit. She’s independent, brave, and resourceful. I believe she has no worries of being sent back home. The Academy tells the recruits that if they don’t pass future tests their fate is being sent back to their homes.
The art is also very colorful and unique. I like to just soak in all the other types of people Vep encounters. All the technology in this series is organic. Every creature has a purpose, but not in a silly way like you would see in the classic cartoon The Flintstone’s. I’m enjoying this series so far because of the “technology” in the story. The story so far leads me to believe that all these organic items are bred for certain purposes. That’s a crazy but intriguing concept within itself. Oh, and let’s not forget this amazing plot that is unfolding before my eyes.
