Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Theater. I’m kind of locked in for this one no matter how I slice it. While the movie based on the best-selling books looks good enough to warrant a viewing on its on own merit, my lady recently nabbed the book, and I’m curious to read it as well as see the movie shortly following. Also, the material seems pretty dark in an interesting way, and the cast in the film is a who’s who of young Hollywood, especially Jennifer Lawrence, who is rising through the ranks of someone to follow. In any case, I’ll be checking this one out some way or another. –LJF

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Theater. We’ve seen dystopian sci-fi dramas like this before — The Running Man, Logan’s Run, Rollerball, etc. Where the seemingly civilized society holds barbaric games in order to entertainment the masses. The games have tremendous political meaning to them — both in the world of the film and as an allegory for modern times. And of course, there’s the one character, the rebellious man or woman who end up leading a revolution against the tyrannical government. But there’s something special about The Hunger Games. It’s got a tremendous cast headed up by Jennifer Lawrence, who’s becoming the premier young actress of our time. It also has Woody Harrelson, who after seeing him in the HBO film Game Change, has made me realize he’s one of the best supporting actors in the industry. Also, what I love about this trailer is that it really gives us a glimpse of the epic, grandiose nature of the film and the intimate, personal drama that will make the film more than just a popcorn epic. In fact, let me make a bold prediction — we may be looking at a Best Picture contender. If the film lives up to the amount of critical hype it has been getting and it hits (or exceeds) the box office numbers its projected to have — don’t be surprised if it’s up for an Oscar next year. –BB
