31 Days of Horror 2014: House 2: The Second Story

After moving into his childhood home where his parents were murdered, Jesse (Arye Gross) stumbles upon a crystal skull that not only grants eternal youth to its owner, but changes the space time continuum.

Jesse returns to the home after twenty plus years and becomes obsessed with this crystal skull that he finds on the mantel. He begins to research the origin of the skull, which leads him to information on his great, great grandfather, whom he digs up and finds isn’t exactly dead.

Jesse and Gramps (Royal Dano) experience several century changes with the skull, forcing them into some ridiculous fights with Aztecs, dinosaurs and eventually, with the cowboy, Slim (Dean Cleverdon), that killed Jesse’s parents, who turned out to be an old friend of Gramps, who betrayed him.

House 2 is a completely unrelated sequel to the original and really shouldn’t be categorized as a horror film. I would say it is more of an adventure film that is far superior to the joke that was Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Jesse and Gramps make far better sidekicks than Indiana and Mutt.

I remember seeing House 2 as a small child and finding it hilarious. Jesse ends up with a pet caterpillar dog hybrid that is ridiculously adorable and I am still, to this day, angry that they don’t exist for me to have one. The fight between Gramps and Slim was a little scary for me back then but not enough to where I wouldn’t suggest letting your kids watch it. In fact, I would very much recommend this as a family friendly film.

With appearances by Lar-Park Lincoln, John Ratzenberger, Bill Mahr and even Kane Hodder as the gorilla man, House 2 is full of recognizable names but no recognizable horror. Still, it is a fun Halloween movie and I recommend adding it to your viewing list this season.
