Ranking The Mission: Impossible Films

1. Mission: Impossible

Release Date: May 22, 1996
Director: Brian DePalma
Starring: Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Ving Rhames, Jean Reno, Emmanuelle Beart, Emilio Estevez, Henry Czerny, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vanessa Redgrave.

Favorite Scene: The Vault Heist

The first Mission Impossible is the best one because it’s the only real spy film in the entire series.  Ethan Hunt’s goal to clear his name before the U.S. government involves a plot of deception, betrayal, carefully calculated missions that really do seem impossible. The vault heist scene that I have posted for my lovely readers is able to make you poop yourself as an audience member without having one Michael Bay-esque explosion in it. Now there are some hardcore fans of the television show who hate that this film turned the character of Jim Phelps into a bad guy. I understand their frustration but I feel this change not only makes the film more interesting on the surface but gives the film some thematic depth. What happens to all of the men and women who have been spying for the United States for many years when there is no big bad Soviet Union to rally against? This movie states that they start to despise the nation that they once defended. That fact may be more important than ever before no matter what your political affiliation may be.
