Review: Supergirl Annual #1

By: Sheena Fisher

Well guys, the annual picks up right where issue #12 left us. Solomon Grundy was about to attack National City. He had grown thanks to some help from the Emerald Mistress and her minions. Supergirl had previously been shot by a mysterious ray and was having issues controlling her powers. Supergirl was even more supercharged than normal, and was so strong she was caving in floors by stepping too hard.

Now that you’re caught up let’s talk about some insane things that are going down in National City. I hope you read the last issue because spoilers from it will be coming up. We found out that the Emerald Empress wanted to take down Supergirl from the inside. That she had a devious plan to make her colleagues and the general public think poorly of Kara. The worst part is the Empress even has a replacement for Supergirl.

Supergirl is battling Solomon Grundy and gets interrupted by Indigo. Indigo is not a villain, but thanks to Emerald Empress she believes Supergirl is. And, remember when Kara was at the DEO in issue 11 and told her father she wouldn’t give up on him? Well, the Empress decides to visit Cat Grant, hack into DEO footage, and share that footage on the news app. In case you forgot her father tried to kill her and destroy the city. That’s enough to make National City turn on Supergirl and trust in Indigo.

Kara makes her way to The Scabbard in search of a cure for her supercharged powers. Luckily Dr. Veritas is able to analyze and figure out what’s going on. It looks like Kara will explode if something isn’t done to stop the progression of the substance that was shot into her. Dr. Veritas does a procedure she believes could stop the exploding Supergirl part. But, you’ll have to pick up this issue to see if it was a success. I can’t give too much away.

Kara is still in pain from the procedure and makes her way under National City and towards the DEO where Emerald Empress currently is. Kara is able to find a way in and on the other side are her wonderful Earth parents Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers. Together they make their way towards Emerald Empress to stop her. Can they save National City? Will Kara explode?

This annual was fun. There were a lot of reveals, Emerald Empress shares exactly why she is trying to bring down Supergirl. We learn more about Indigo, and there’s some insane things leading into issue 13. The writers have been good with mixing story and action. They have also been good with making you care a lot for Kara as she’s going through this weird change with her powers. Pick up the annual and judge for yourself. My rating 8.5/10.
