Review: Gotham City Garage #4

This issue kicks off with Kara in a busy bar talking to Nightwing. Nightwing is trash talking Red Hood all while explaining how he is a better rider than Jason Todd. While this is going on Kara and Nightwing are approached by Catwoman. She has a scheme she wants some help with. But, Catwoman doesn’t want to bring Barda into the mix.

Catwoman still calls Nightwing Robin, and he immediately corrects her. Kara thought it was Dick, but he only lets friends use that name. Catwoman doesn’t know Kara so she tells her to hush while the “adults talk.” But, Catwoman lets Kara see the plan anyway. She wants Nightwing’s help in breaking into a place called Amazo.

Amazo is a huge factory where Gardeners are created. In case you forgot, gardeners are the weird protectors of The Garden that kill people if they are under the slightest suspicion, or if the person feels any emotion they deem off-putting. The gardeners look like a certain bat most of us DC fans are fond of as well. Catwoman gives Nightwing and Kara blueprints and tells Nightwing she needs his expertise, access, and discretion. Catwoman then agrees to let Kara join her and Nightwing as long as she doesn’t rat them out to Barda.

Our team of misfit’s take off and find a large mountain in the middle of the desert. Of course, it’s not actually a mountain, it’s Amazo. The three climb in through an access point Catwoman has found and as soon as they enter they’re greeted by quite a few gardeners. Nightwing and Catwoman show off their amazing acrobatic skills while Kara uses brute force to mow down the gardeners. It works until the trio are greeted by some large flying security bot.

Catwoman instructs them to run and in the process she makes sure she gets separated. Nightwing and Kara have been abandoned in a large hanger with a bigger security bot. This one has some gnarly looking tires. Nightwing figures if they can out-ride it on their bikes the bot can’t follow. So they take off together.

While Nightwing and Kara and trying to evade the security bot we learn the real reason why Catwoman wanted to break into Amazo. Here is where we also learn a little bit more about the creation of the gardeners. And, as you suspected, there’s nothing good going on there. It seems Catwoman wants to make sure no more gardeners can be created, and she’s doing what she can to make it stop. But, what is really driving Catwoman to want to do all of this?

This issue was nuts. A lot of action, a great team-up, and some crazy reveals. While all this was going down I kept thinking “How can Catwoman possibly know that Nightwing’s biometrics will still grant him access into this building?” Don’t worry, if you pick up this issue you will learn the answer, and a lot more about Catwoman’s role in this series. You will also get to know more about the gardeners, and see a cameo from another familiar face that I didn’t want to spoil.

It was also great to see Kara more confident and working with this team. She’s grown a lot since issue #1 in regards to knowing her physical capabilities. Kara is also feeling more at home with the Gotham City Garage and its members. I can’t wait to see what Catwoman has planned for the future from here. Pick up this issue to get the whole story at your local comic shop.
