Is it just me, or have Jon and Kate finally gone off the deep end? Kate’s latest claim — that Jon withdrew all the money in their joint account, leaving her unable to pay bills or feed her many kiddies — is just the latest in a salacious string of tabloid-happy headlines from the warring couple. First comes love, then comes accusations of affairs with 20-year-olds, then comes bankruptcy.

This is the ultimate problem with reality TV….by allowing television to infiltrate your home and private life, the line then becomes blurred as to what is fit for public consumption. Sure, showing the kids at baking class is fun…but what about showing them on the toilet? TMI, in my opinion.
Furthermore, because these children are not technically “actors”, laws that were developed to help protect money earned by child actors (such as Gary Coleman) do not apply. Though the children are certainly the main attraction (one would assume) and are in front of the camera for hours a day (unregulated b/c they are not actors), they are not being properly compensated and there is no safeguard in place to ensure that they will reap any of the rewards of this show in the future.
Sadly, because Jon & Kate partook in fertility treatments so precariously (and rather prematurely, I might add) they are left with quite a large brood and no feasible way to provide for them, save TLC. Sure the salaries of an RN and IT Professional are substantial, but can they possibly provide enough for so many? Or are Jon and Kate stuck in reality TV limbo, where it may be their only chance for survival with the “plus 8”?
