logan j. fowler and bill bodkin, discuss the latest film about “the first avenger” …

I’ve been pumped for this flick since day one, and while I will admit that that fellow future Avenger Thor’s movie looks a little bit better as of right now, Captain America still looks like it’s going to be a fun ride. The puny Steve Rogers CGI looks seamless, and Chris Evans seems to be taking the role very seriously which is important to us geeks. My biggest problem with the whole thing? I do not like his helmet. Minor gripe aside, with a stellar cast including not only Evans but also Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving, plus a semi crossover (did you see Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man’s, dad Howard in the trailer?) as I would term it, Captain America has an opening weekend viewing for me without a shadow of a doubt. America! F**k Yeah!

Captain America might be the hardest Marvel character to adapt to the big screen. He might be a “super soldier,” but he has no cool gimmickery like Iron Man and he’s not a mutant like any of the X-Men. He just happens to be really strong and carries a shield. He’s all steak and no sizzle. He’s not a “sexy” Marvel character. And I think this adaptation is going to feed into the lack of flash and sexiness and go for visceral, bare knuckle, red-blooded American appeal. This Captain America is going to be “The American Badass,” and I think with all the wizardry and CGI comic book movies have thrown our in the past decade, seeing a character like this, especially from Marvel (we’ve already seen this from the reignited Christopher Nolan helmed Batman films), is refreshing. I was a bit unsure if Chris Evans could pull of Captain America — let’s face it, he was awful as The Human Torch. But after strong performances in The Losers, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Street Kings, I have faith he can be a good Captain. Hugo Weaving is going to own as The Crimson Skull and a solid supporting cast of Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark), Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, Derek Luke and others, should make this big screen adaptation not only badass, but well-acted and enjoyable.

Nice review, Bodkin. I love your analogies…”all steak, no sizzle.”
I’ve gotta agree, I wasn’t thinking it was going to be any good when I first heard about it but… it’s starting to look pretty damn sweet.
Plus, if Hugo Weaving is in it (and as the villain, no less), that pretty much automatically makes it badass.
