Trailer Tuesday: Scream 4

logan j. fowler and bill bodkin discuss the trailer for the fourth (and final? … probably not) installment of the horror franchise …

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent.
While I immensely enjoyed the first Scream and mildly enjoyed the second one, I still haven’t given Scream 3 a viewing, so best do that before I before even sit down with this one. While the Scream movies definitely try for more cerebral scares then using straight up gore (it’s far removed from the “torture porn” that is the Saw series), trying to milk more out of a older franchise may not bode well for the fourth installment. However, the trio (Cambpell, Cox and Arquette) have returned, so that may put fans in the seats when it releases. Also, as the Fast And Furious movies prove, people will still give formulaic franchises a shot. With all that said, I’m not feeling theater with this one. I’ll just enjoy it in the comfort of my own home.

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Undecided.
I am in the rare category of those people who have never seen any of the Scream films. So, I remain strongly undecided if I want to even see the fouth installment. I have heard great things about the original film, and one day I will get around to viewing it, but there’s nothing in this new trailer that is “screaming” for me to spend my money at the theater for it (and possibly even the $1 at Redbox). In fact, I’m not sure I’d even dedicate my time to watching the first three films to catch myself up for No. 4. I have been in similar situations like this, namely with Toy Story. When I saw Toy Story 3’s trailer last year, I knew I had to finally watch the first two installments because TS3 looked that good. So watch them I did (borrowing copies from Logan Fowler) in the same night, and the next day my wife and I ran out to see the final chapter. Scream 4 does none of this for me. Frankly, I could care less if the uber-annoying Hayden Panettiere, sporting one of the worst haircuts since Flock Of Seagulls was relevant, gets offed. Same goes for the new cast. However, there is the whole “whodunnit” element that mildly intrigues me. Is this actually the real killer? Is Neve Campbell actually in an asylum and completely hallucinating the whole new movie? I totally made that up, but it’d be interesting. Scream 4, I shrug my shoulders in indifference to you … for now.

  1. I don’t think it can be “the real killer”…watch Scream and you’ll realize why

I say “No thanks” to this turd. Is this the only way Neve Campbell can remain mildly relevant? I’d sooner suggest a return of The Craft franchise than a FOURTH Scream movie.

BTW – what kind of town celebrates a serial/spree killer?

  2. I took the 15th off of work in order to celebrate the 4th Scream installment with some friends. We will be having a Scream marathon: 1, 2, 3 at my apartment followed by 4 in the theater. I saw the first three when they came out and Im not about to miss the 4th. I am a huge horror junkie and Scream changed all of the rules, creating a new genre of horror. Considering its writer, Kevin Williamson, went on to make Dawsons Creek, I think we can all be impressed that something this influental could come from him.
Now, having said my piece, I think there can only be 2 outcomes of this movie.
    1) Sydney Prescott will die. Yes, Scream has prided itself on being different from the rest and changing all of the rules but, what better way to end it than to end it like every other horror movie? Who would see that coming? The heroine always dies in horror movie series. Nancy Thompson died in Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Laurie Strode finally got it in Halloween: Resurrection. So, why should Sydney make it out alive?
    2) Sydney will be the killer. Its the perfect twist to end it all. The heroine has never turned around and gone serial murderer. Personally, if I were Sydney, Id off everyone. The girl has lost 2 boyfriends, numerous friends, and been betrayed by almost everyone she has ever trusted. Why shouldnt she go psycho? And it would open up the horror genre to a new set of rules, which is exactly how it all started. Kind of poetic.
I, personally, cant wait to see how it ends!
