joe zorzi interview Love Automatic for our Watermark Wednesday interview series …
This week’s edition of Pop-Break and ShoreAlternative.com’s Watermark Wednesday focuses on the central New Jersey band Love Automatic. Featuring ex-members of groups like Senses Fail and Armor For Sleep, one might assume this band would have a sort of pop-punk influence. That’s not the case at all. Love Automatic is a techno band who are much more likely to be compared to Daft Punk than Green Day.
Love Automatic has been playing together since 2008 and have since honed their skills to create some super-catchy techno/house songs. The band will release their debut EP, Organ Donor, later this month and plan on playing shows to support it throughout the summer. This week, Pop-Break.com’s Joe Zorzi had the chance to talk with drummer Mike Glita about their new album and their show this Wednesday at the Watermark in Asbury Park, N.J., with Fifteen Fleeting and BlackBells.

Pop-Break: So your debut EP, Organ Donor, comes out later this month. Can you tell us a little bit about this release and what the name signifies?
Love Automatic: The EP means a lot to us as musicians, and as a group. While we have been a group since 2008, it was a learning and growing process to get to this point in our career. Organ Donor means a lot to us because it represents exactly where we want to be as a group. As far as the name goes, it was originally just a working title for one of the tracks on the EP. For some reason the name spoke to Nick and I, and we felt that it seemed only fitting. I, myself, found the name to stand out and almost represent us “donating our organs,” our “heart and soul,” as you will, to our fans.
PB: You’ve been posting a few tracks here and there from the EP, including “Save My Soul” and “Nightmare.” How has the reception been so far?
LA: So far, the reception has continuously been exceeding our expectations. We love these songs, and hope that people love them just the same. We will be releasing another track this coming week, as well.
PB: Love Automatic is stylistically a far cry away from some of your previous projects (e.g., Armor For Sleep, Senses Fail). What would you say inspired you guys to start writing songs more in the techno/house genre?
LA: All of us have always been fans of dance music. Back when I decided to start my side project, Knights In Paris, when I was in Senses Fail, I wanted to do something more electronically based. When I was looking for the other piece to the puzzle, I came across Nick. Nick has been making house, electro, and trance music since he was in middle school. We slowly started to evolve and get better with what we were doing. Then, when we started Love Automatic, it only was natural for us to move in the electro house direction. I always love a challenge, and could never see myself always doing the exact same thing. At this point in my life, electronic music seems like the only interesting and challenging genre for me to write/play.
PB: If you guys could work with any artist, who would you choose?
LA: This is a really tough question. Honestly, I’ve never been huge on collaborations in music, unless it completely makes sense, or seems necessary for a song. I think if we could find a badass female vocalist, it might be a cool idea for a collaboration someday. Right now, we’re hoping to work on a collaboration with this awesome producer from Norway, Gunslinger Jones.
PB: What are your guys plans for the summer?
LA: Right now, we’re lining up more shows in the Northeast, and hopefully we can make it to other parts of the U.S. before summer’s end. We also are already beginning to work on a follow up EP to Organ Donor.
PB: Are you guys excited for your show at the Watermark this Wednesday?
LA: Sure, we’re always excited to play shows. It’s our first time playing there, so we’re not exactly sure what to expect.
PB: You guys are playing the Watermark show along with Fleeting Fifteen and BlackBells. Have you played with either of them before?
LA: We haven’t played with either of them, but I’m sure it’ll be a good time.
PB:What kind of show should people be preparing themselves for?
LA: I would you say you can’t exactly prepare yourself for us, because most likely we will break whatever your preconceived notions of us are.
