bill bodkin and logan j. fowler discuss the trailer for Attack The Block — a new alien invasion thriller/comedy from the producers of Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz and the director of Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy and Son Of Rambow …
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Undecided.
Having watched the trailer for Attack The Block, I will say it looks like a lot of fun. Evoking memories of survival horror/comedy like Zombieland or Shaun Of The Dead (whose producers share credits on Attack The Block), the flick sees a group of southern London natives trying to take down an alien … or is it multiple aliens? Anyway, Nick Frost (Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, Paul) is Simon Pegg-less here (still dealing with an alien, though), but it’s nice to finally see the guy get the spotlight as he’s always been second to Pegg’s leading-man status. Also, he’s the only real big name in the flick. Is it enough of a sell to the public? We’ll have to see, but having a cast of unknowns might give the film more authenticity. Whatever the case, Attack The Block might be a theater viewing for yours truly, but I’m not totally sure yet. Time will tell.

I have been a big fan of everything the people behind Attack The Block have produced. Big Talk Productions has produced my favorite TV series (Spaced) and some of my favorite films (Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz), while director Joe Cornish has directed two extremely underrated and extremely fun films (Hitchhiker’s Guide and Son Of Rambow). Both the producers and directors are well-versed in creating movies that deftly blend comedy, action, horror, suspense and, most importantly, heart. All of their films and shows have featured well-written, relatable characters. The trailer reminds me a lot of Shaun Of The Dead‘s first U.S. trailer — an ensemble of unfamiliar Brits (with one or two recognizable faces) battling a deadly unhuman force with their own wit, homemade weapons and insecurities. Bonus points, of course, go to the film for casting Nick Frost. The man is genius and will no doubt provide loads of laughs. The film was a massive critical success at South by Southwest, so I cannot wait for its U.S. release.
