daniel cohen would like to see new chapters for the following films …
In the spirit of Chandler Bing: ‘Could there be any more sequels?’
Yes, Hollywood is pretty much dominated by the almighty ‘continuing story.’ The majority of movies today are even written with sequels already in mind. I can cite several examples just from this year alone: Green Lantern, I Am Number Four, Priest, The Three Musketeers, and on, and on, and on…it’s ridiculous!
I guess we should just accept that sequels are going to happen, whether it’s two years later, or even 30 years later (A Blade Runner sequel is happening, folks). But with all these sequels, I wanted to touch on a few that I actually would like to see. Now as I understand it, some of these might actually happen, or have at least been talked about. But whether they are in development, production, or merely being thought of in some Los Angeles coffee shop at this very moment, here are five sequels I’d most like to plop down my 10 bucks for:
5. Bill And Ted 3
So I guess this one is actually happening. Keanu Reeves has been up front about it whenever he’s asked in an interview, and Alex Winter even tweeted earlier this year that a script is complete. I think Bill And Ted’s Bogus Journey is one of the most underrated movies out there. I love that film, and I’m just intrigued as all hell to see what a third movie would be about. And don’t even pretend like you aren’t curious to see Keanu Reeves play Ted again, and at almost fifty years old. What the hell is that going to be like? The only downer to this is that there would be no George Carlin as Rufus…bogus. But I am so ready for more … WYLD STALLIONS!
4. The Big Lebowski 2
I’m shocked that a sequel has never been mentioned for The Big Lebowski (despite Tara Reid’s ludicrous statement she was in the midst of filming it). You would think with its cult status, someone would have said, ‘Hey, why aren’t we doing a Big Lebowski sequel?’ Is it the age of Jeff Bridges and John Goodman? Would age really matter in a Big Lebowski film? I guess a sequel doesn’t feel like something the Coen brothers would do, and I would imagine Bridges and Goodman would only do it if they were involved. Certainly no Donny is a downer, but he could show up in some kind of a hallucinogenic sequence, right? And why can’t you get a new Donny? As much as I love Steve Buscemi and that character, it’s not like you can’t replace him, whereas with Bridges and Goodman, they are absolutely essential. And besides, Walter would be adamant about getting a bowling replacement as soon as possible.
3. Ghostbusters 3
While I desperately want to see Ghostbusters 3, I’m eventually going to get to the point of not caring anymore. How many years has this movie been in development? I still don’t think the window has closed for this film with the original cast, but time is slipping away. And if there is a Ghostbusters 3, it needs to be about the original Ghostbusters. I’ve read this crap about handing the keys over to a younger group, with guys like Ben Stiller or Steve Carell being suggested [Editor’s Note: Back in the late ’90s, Chris Farley was suggested, and a few years ago it looked like Seth Rogen was going to be attached]. That’s bullshit. If you want to do that at the end of the movie, then fine, but I need to see one more film where the actual Ghostbusters (Ray, Egon, Peter, and Winston) are the central characters, and not just in the background as ‘advisors’ or ‘trainers.’ I don’t care if they are all 300 pounds: They are the Ghostbusters. From everything I’ve read, the biggest hold up is that Bill Murray refuses to confirm his involvement one way or the other. Look, I respect Murray if he decides not to do it, but seriously dude, make up your mind. If Ghostbusters 3 does actually happen, the apocalypse can’t be to far away.
2. Roger Rabbit 2
This is another one that’s supposedly going to happen with director Robert Zemeckis, who of course helmed the original. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is one of my all-time favorite movies. I absolutely believe there’s another story to be told in that universe. A prequel came very close to being made several times, but I’m not keen on a prequel concept. I want a continuing story. And even though the dude is almost seventy, the thought of seeing Bob Hoskins return as Eddie Valiant would be insanely awesome. Hoskins has even expressed interest in this. If this film actually happens though, the cartoons need to be 2D animation, they just have to be. If Roger Rabbit is running around as a CG character, I’m going to cry into my bucket of popcorn. Unless part of the plot involves cartoon characters turning CG, and Roger’s career is coming to an end because he’s still 2D, that would be the only way I could accept it.
1. Tim Burton’s Batman 3
Well, I can safely say this is one movie that will never happen. Before I get into this, let me be very clear about something: The Christopher Nolan Batman movies are the two best Batman movies by far, it’s not even close. Having said that, I still have a special place in my heart for the two Burton films, and yes, that includes Batman Returns. Batman Returns is a great movie: it’s just not the most faithful adaptation of Batman, which is why I can understand people bashing it. After seeing Batman Returns, I’m just dying to know what Burton would have done with a third one, especially with a character like the Riddler. How fricking demented would that movie have been? It’s the film I wonder about more than any other movie, and it’s one of the films I wish more than any other I could wish into existence. I guess the furthest Burton’s third Batman film got was Marlon Wayans being set to play Robin, and that the Riddler would have a question mark shaved into his head. I’m happy the way the Batman movie universe played out, but part of me still wonders what crazy old Tim Burton would have done, had he been given free reign like he had on Batman Returns. We’ll never know…
With all the sequels, prequels, re-boots, re-quels, and pre-boots going on in Hollywood, those are just some of the ones I have a strong curiosity about. I’m confident Bill And Ted 3 will find its way to cinemas, but the other four … who knows? One thing’s for sure though: As long as there are movies, there will always be sequels.
